Hello, readers! Today I want to share my review of the young adult novel Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood.

La historia gira en torno a Mallory, una joven de 18 años que se hizo cargo de su familia tras el fallecimiento de su padre. Su madre padece una enfermedad como la artritis que le causa dolores y le impide trabajar con normalidad y, además, tiene dos hermanas adolescentes que necesitan cuidados, Sabrina y Darcy. Mallory era una jugadora de ajedrez no profesional, pero lo dejó todo de lado para conseguir un trabajo y mantener a su familia, incluso sus estudios. Pero, un día, su mejor amiga la convence de participar en una competición de ajedrez a beneficio y allí le termina ganando la partida al jugador estrella que está en el puesto número uno de los mejores del mundo del ajedrez. Este es el comienzo de algo mucho más grande y ella deberá tomar la decisión darle rienda suelta a su pasión por este deporte de inteligencia de nuevo o seguir con su vida tal y como estaba antes.

The story revolves around Mallory, an 18-year-old who took charge of her family after her father’s death. Her mother suffers from a condition similar to arthritis that causes her pain and prevents her from working normally, and she also has two teenage sisters who need care: Sabrina and Darcy. Mallory used to be an amateur chess player, but she put it all aside to get a job and support her family—even putting her studies on hold. But one day, her best friend convinces her to participate in a charity chess tournament, where she ends up beating the star player who is ranked number one in the world. This is the beginning of something much bigger, and she must decide whether to give free rein to her passion for this intellectual sport once again or continue with her life just as it was before.

Es un libro juvenil con todas las letras, tiene esos dilemas existenciales propios de la adolescencia, de equivocarte y volver a encontrar el camino hacia lo que realmente te gusta y te hace feliz. El romance es super dulce, nada tóxico ni pesado de digerir, tiene su punto justo, ya que tampoco es el tema principal de esta historia en mi opinión. Creo que el eje central es tener una segunda oportunidad para hacerlo mejor, poder sanar viejos traumas y volver a empezar, aunque sea con muchas dudas y miedos. También nos habla acerca de la familia.

It’s a young adult book through and through; it features those existential dilemmas typical of adolescence—making mistakes and finding your way back to what you truly love and what makes you happy. The romance is super sweet—nothing toxic or hard to stomach—and it strikes just the right balance, since it’s not the main focus of this story, in my opinion. I think the central theme is getting a second chance to do better, to heal old traumas, and to start over—even if it’s with a lot of doubts and fears. It also talks about family.

Mallory es una protagonista de 18 años que dejó de lado sus estudios para priorizar ocuparse de su familia, una madre y sus dos hermanas más chicas, pero en ese afán de ser útil se termina convirtiendo en un lastre. Un poco insoportable por momentos, pero igual la queremos. Ella es la viva imagen de lo que puede hacerte la culpa, pero me gustó ese lado libre y salvaje que demostraba en ocasiones.

Mallory is an 18-year-old protagonist who put her studies on hold to focus on taking care of her family—her mother and her two younger sisters—but in her eagerness to be helpful, she ends up becoming a burden. She can be a little unbearable at times, but we love her anyway. She’s the living embodiment of what guilt can do to you, but I liked that free-spirited, wild side she showed from time to time.

Nolan es un chico de 20 años que creció en el ojo público del ajedrez. Es alguien reservado y con fama de malhumorado, pero es todo lo contrario. Es abierto y divertido con los suyos, aunque también tiene un pasado un poco triste que lo hizo alejarse de su familia. Creo que lo que no me gustó mucho del libro es que dejaran sin resolver este asunto. Como que la protagonista principal fue Mallory y solo le dieron importancia a su historia.

Nolan is a 20-year-old who grew up in the public eye of the chess world. He’s reserved and has a reputation for being grumpy, but he’s actually the complete opposite. He’s open and fun to be around with his close friends, though he also has a somewhat sad past that caused him to drift away from his family. I think what I didn’t like so much about the book is that they left this issue unresolved. It’s as if Mallory was the main character and they only focused on her story.

Pero quitando eso, el libro estuvo increíble, la escritura de Ali siempre me resulta atrapante. Hasta ahora no encontré libro de ella que no me resulte un tanto adictivo, los empiezo y agarró ritmo enseguida. Este es el cuarto que leo de ella. Todavía no probé su saga de fantasía, pero será lo próximo que lea. También me encanta que siempre se informa mucho a la hora de escribir sus historias. Acá tuvo que aprender sobre jugadas de ajedrez y cómo funciona este mundo, y soy fan de las críticas que siempre deja en ellos acerca del machismo que se dan en estos ámbitos. Es por esto que es una de mis autoras favoritas.

But aside from that, the book was incredible—I always find Ali’s writing captivating. So far, I haven’t come across a book of hers that I didn’t find somewhat addictive; I start them and get into the flow right away. This is the fourth one of hers I’ve read. I haven’t tried her fantasy series yet, but it’ll be the next thing I read. I also love that she always does a lot of research when writing her stories. For this one, she had to learn about chess moves and how that world works, and I’m a fan of the critiques she always includes about the sexism that exists in those circles. That’s why she’s one of my favorite authors.

Volviendo al libro, es una historia que recomiendo mucho leer. Por momentos me frustraba un poco y no entendía cómo su familia no podía ser más considerada con ella que estaba dando lo mejor para mantenerlas saludables y felices. Pero luego todo se va acomodando de a poco. También me resultó una lectura divertida y ligera. Ideal para leer algo tranquilo y juvenil con un buen enganche. Es una lectura que recomiendo, aunque no es lo mejor que leí de esta autora.

Getting back to the book, it’s a story I highly recommend reading. At times, I felt a little frustrated and couldn’t understand why her family couldn’t be more considerate of her, since she was doing her best to keep them healthy and happy. But then everything gradually falls into place. I also found it to be a fun and light read. It’s perfect for when you want something laid-back and youthful with a good hook. I recommend it, even though it’s not the best book I’ve read by this author.
