📚 Book Review: Iron Flame [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy les vengo a compartir una nueva reseña sobre el libro Alas de hierro, la segunda parte de la saga Empíreo de la autora Rebecca Yarros.

Hello, readers! Today I’m here to share a new review of the book Iron Flame, the second installment in the Empyrean series by author Rebecca Yarros.

En esta segunda parte seguimos los acontecimientos del libro anterior. Violet ya se enfrentó a la verdadera amenaza y tras sobrevivir es consciente que harán falta más que dragones para ganar esta guerra con el enemigo menos pensado. En medio de misterios, verdades que salen a la luz y peligros cada vez más mortales la lealtad será puesta a prueba y solo la unión los mantendrá con vida.

In this second installment, we pick up where the previous book left off. Violet has already faced the true threat, and having survived, she realizes that it will take more than dragons to win this war against an enemy she never expected. Amid mysteries, revelations, and increasingly deadly dangers, their loyalty will be put to the test, and only by standing together will they survive.

Intentaré no hacer spoilers, pero al ser una segunda parte se va a complicar. Debo decir que me gustó este libro, aunque al principio no me engancho tanto como el primero. Más o menos en la segunda mitad de la historia me tuvo atrapada de nuevo. Es que sentí que hubo algo de relleno con tantas idas y vueltas entre Violet y Xaden, y entre contar lo que sabe a sus amigos o seguir manteniéndolo en las sombras mientras evita tener contacto con ellos, alejándose en el proceso. Toda esa parte me frustró un montón.

I'll try not to give away any spoilers, but since this is a sequel, that's going to be tricky. I have to say I liked this book, even though it didn't hook me as much as the first one at first. Around the second half of the story, it had me hooked again. It’s just that I felt there was some filler with all the back-and-forth between Violet and Xaden, and between telling her friends what she knows or keeping it hidden while avoiding contact with them, drifting apart in the process. That whole part frustrated me a lot.

Ya para la segunda parte, con los secretos revelados y un cambio de escenario más allá de la escuela de Basgiath, la trama cobró fuerza a mi parecer y me mantuvo más pendiente de lo que estaba sucediendo. Hubo introducción de nuevos personajes, algunos eran viejos conocidos que me sorprendieron mucho. Sobre todo porque uno debía haber estado muertisimo, y me enoje un poco con la autora por haber hecho eso, completamente normal no jajaja. Bueno, es porque estaba muy metida en la trama para ese entonces y fue como wtf.

By the second part, with the secrets revealed and the setting shifting beyond Basgiath’s school, the plot really picked up steam in my opinion and kept me more engaged in what was happening. New characters were introduced, some of whom were old acquaintances that really surprised me. Especially because one of them should have been dead as a doornail, and I got a little mad at the author for doing that—which is totally normal, haha. Well, it’s because I was so into the plot by then, and it was like, “WTF?”

Pero sí, muy mala decisión, aunque haya ayudado a la trama final a desarrollarse como lo hizo. Puedo decir que fue un libro que me hizo enojar más de una vez. También me hizo sufrir en los momentos de tensión y recordando a Liam, es algo que no voy a superar, ya lo tengo asumido. Cada vez que lo nombraban ahí estaban las lagrimas.

But yes, it was a really bad decision, even though it helped the final plot unfold the way it did. I can say that this book made me angry more than once. It also made me suffer during the tense moments, and thinking about Liam is something I’ll never get over—I’ve come to terms with that. Every time his name came up, the tears would start flowing.

Me gustó que el mundo se ampliará más allá de las fronteras de la escuela. También me gustó conocer más acerca de las costumbres y cómo viven los pilotos de grifos y su vínculo con ellos. Todavía no entiendo esa pelea absurda entre dragones y grifos cuando está claro que el enemigo es otro. Son los venim con sus guivernos. Estaría bien saber más de estos últimos también, aunque sí nos mostraron parte de su jerarquía y que hay diferentes tipos de guivernos. Pero todavía sigo sin entender muy bien cuáles son sus propósitos, qué es lo que quieren lograr. Espero saber más de esto en el próximo libro.

I liked that the world will expand beyond the school’s boundaries. I also liked learning more about the customs and how griffin riders live, as well as their connection to the griffins. I still don’t understand that absurd fight between dragons and griffins when it’s clear that the enemy is someone else. It’s the Venim with their wyverns. It would be nice to learn more about the latter as well, even though they did show us part of their hierarchy and that there are different types of guivernos. But I still don’t quite understand what their goals are, what they’re trying to achieve. I hope to learn more about this in the next book.

Ya sé que esto es un romantasy, y me sabe mal decirlo, pero no conecto tanto con el romance entre Violet y Xaden, se me hacen un poco toxicos los dos a su manera. Uno no expresa lo que siente y la otra le cuesta ser confrontativa. Donde mejor se comunican es durante las escenas picantes, pero un amor debería ser más que eso. Todavía no me siento atrapada por este romance, no sueño con un Xaden ni mucho menos jajaja. Por otro lado, lo bueno es que no empecé a leer esta saga por ellos, sino por los dragones y de estos tengo a montones.

I know this is a romantasy, and I hate to say it, but I don't really connect with the romance between Violet and Xaden—they both seem a little toxic to me in their own ways. One doesn’t express his feelings, and the other has a hard time being confrontational. They communicate best during the steamy scenes, but love should be more than that. I still don’t feel swept up in this romance; I don’t dream about Xaden, far from it, hahaha. On the other hand, the good thing is that I didn’t start reading this series for them, but for the dragons—and there are plenty of those.

Lo que yo amo a Tairn y Andarna no tiene sentido, y también a los dragones de sus amigos, aunque no tenga una relación directa con ellos porque no sabemos en sí cómo piensan, pero sí conocemos los pensamientos de estos dos y son todo lo que esta bien en la historia. Amo la dinámica entre padre e hija que tienen Tairn y Andarna a pesar de que no lo sean. Ella lo admira un montón. Me encantó ver a esta Andarna adolescente y caprichosa, aunque me sacó de quicio en más de una ocasión, igual la amé. Ella fue la heroina en todo este lío, me intriga un montón su linaje y ojalá lo siga descubriendo en las próximas entregas.

My love for Tairn and Andarna is beyond words, and the same goes for their dragon friends—even though I don’t have a direct connection with them, since we don’t actually know how they think, we do know the thoughts of these two, and they embody everything that’s right about the story. I love the father-daughter dynamic between Tairn and Andarna, even though they aren’t actually related. She admires him so much. I loved seeing this teenage, headstrong Andarna—even though she drove me crazy more than once, I still loved her. She was the heroine in all this mess; I’m really intrigued by her lineage, and I hope to keep discovering more about it in the next installments.

Por lo pronto, les recomiendo esta saga si les gustan las intrigas políticas y los dragones.

For now, I recommend this series if you like political intrigue and dragons.
