My Grandmother's First Death Anniversary: We Prayed, Prepare Food, and Visited the Cemetery
It's been a year since our kind, caring and loving Lola left us. We prayed, prepared food and visited her at the cemetery, along with our other relatives who have passed.
The night before, we spent hours preparing the chickens and slicing the pork to lighten the workload for the next day. Slaughtering three chickens at once was truly exhausting. We worked from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The following morning, I had to watch the store because my aunt was attending my cousin's school meeting and her husband was running some errands on the farm. Since mama and my other aunts were busy with the rest of the preparations, I had no choice but to help out and leave the house.
I kept wondering why my feet hurt so badly. Good thing I was just minding the store, because they were really aching. My aunt didn't get back until after 10 AM. I told her I'd go home at 11a.m. since my feet were hurt and swollen.
By the time I got home, everything was ready. We were waiting until 3 p.m. for the church members to hold my grandmother's prayer service. To pass the time, my cousin suggested a sing-along, so we checked the elders if it was okay to sing before the service started. They gave us the go-ahead and we sang to our heart's content.
My cousin's were busy picking songs to perform too. We only stopped once guests started arriving.
My younger uncles were playing something on their phones, ignoring the noise around them.
After almost 30 minutes of prayer service, everyone ate.
While we were eating, a little boy kept me entertained. He was full of energy- eating with his mom while playing with his toys, climbing the couch and running around the house.
Just as it is started to get dark, my mother told me were going to visit Grandma at the cemetery.
It looked like it was about to pour, so we hurried. We passed by Auntie's store but couldn't stop. We also passed the church and my old school- they'd changed, and the improvements were visible. It was nearly dark, and the atmosphere felt like something out of the horror movie. "I love this view", I whispered to myself.
On the way, we passed what looked like a haunted house near, though someone clearly lived there.
When we finally reached the cemetery, we lit candles for our relatives buried near grandma. After praying for them, we waited for the candles to burn down.
Then thunder rumbles and lightning flashed so we rushed home. We stopped by the store, and just after we got there, the rain started pouring. We were lucky-we got to the store before the downpour and didn't get wet.
We enjoyed chatting with Auntie and her husband at the store. After sitting with them for almost an hour, the rain finally stopped. Since it was already late, we decided to head home.
My blog ends here! Thanks for reading. Lovelots 😚
