From Genesis to Today: How Human Greed Reveals What Really Lives in Our Hearts

Following biblical history, one thing God regretted was that he created man and realized that man's heart was desperately wicked. Since the inception of creation, men had always desired their selfish interests. Greed and the love of money had clouded the place of love. Men had loved gold and silver above the love of humanity, and it grows worse daily. Wickedness abounds and grows stronger as money becomes more relevant. When status is ranked, money becomes the factor, and as humans, we are tempted not only to meet our day-to-day needs but to become relevant in society.

Aside from silver and gold, greed, hatred, and jealousy are part of men's nature. Since the fall of man, our flesh had always dominated. A man wants everything for himself and does not care if others suffer or not. Sometimes this desire just creeps in—to want everything, not because we brought it upon ourselves, but because it's man's nature to want to hold on. We can see this nature in a child: they take possession of whatever is in their reach and refuse to share or return it. So, love of money may be one thing that has made the world a bad place, but it starts with the nature of man. Until we are able to address that nature, it would be difficult to deal with the external factors that surface. It starts from the inside.

The idea that money answers all things has made many so desperate to make wealth, and it doesn't matter the means through which they acquire it. Money can do a lot of things. When one doesn't have it, they feel like a loser and pressured to get it. Money can make one feast; money can give one the luxury they desire. Just the mere thought of it starts to give room for greed and every evil that accompanies the acquisition of wealth.

It's unfortunate that everything we do can be redirected to acquiring wealth. We study and advance in our studies just to make money and more money. People who steal and kill others can be traced to stealing the person's wealth or being jealous of his wealth. People play bad politics just to acquire wealth and power. People hate those who are better than them financially, and one suddenly notices that in every evil, money is a factor. But does that mean if money wasn't there, there wouldn't be evil? The answer is no. Until we learn to deal with our nature that's evil, we may not be entirely free from the world system where wickedness dwells.
