The Truth About My Appetite: Why I Can't Pick a Favorite Food

When I hear people discuss their favorite meal, I wonder how special they find such food to want to eat it every day without getting bored. My younger brother wouldn't mind staying awake till 2 AM just to sneak and have a taste of his favorite meal whenever we cook it for dinner. My fiancée would keep a cheerful countenance all through the day if she eats her favorite meal, but here I am, without any meal to consider as a favorite. I only enjoy a meal at that moment if it matches my appetite, and any particular meal for three consecutive days easily makes me lose my appetite.

Among other foods, there's my cultural meal that I miss sometimes. Not actually because it's my favorite meal, but because I share a bond with it since childhood. It's called zhepo in my dialect, while some people call it Tuwo. We eat it with garden egg, fish, kandolo, or anything that one finds comfortable to eat it with. Only people from my tribe and a few people from other tribes who have lived with us can prepare it, and that's why I believe I miss it—since it's rare to find, especially if I live in a town where my tribal people do not reside.

To sum it up, I don't have a favorite meal. I enjoy meals based on my appetite at that moment. I can feel like eating rice and stew today, then feel like eating semo and vegetable soup the next day, moi-moi a day after that, and so on. Once I get what I crave for, it becomes my favorite at that very moment. I didn't grow up exposed to plenty of varieties of food, and the few we had were eaten in excess until we no longer craved for them. So it's all about appetite and not about having a specific recipe or meal that I could be lured with.

Sometimes my fiancée worries about that, especially with the fact that she has nothing to appeal to me with after a misunderstanding—I believe that's where favorite meals play vital roles. So whenever you feel like giving me a treat, just ask, "What do you feel like eating at this moment?"
