Your Guide to Perfect Home Espresso

Crafting the perfect shot of espresso at home involves an artful blend of technique and precision. This recipe leads you through the entire process, focusing on essential elements such as dose, yield, and extraction time, while enhancing your skills in grinding, tamping, and pulling the shot. Dive into this Italian tradition and master your espresso game.

Ingredients

☕ 20g of freshly roasted coffee beans, brand of choice
💧 Water for espresso machine

Instructions

1- Select Your Dose:

  • Decide on your desired espresso shot size
  • Select the correct basket (single, double, or triple) for your portafilter
  • For this guide, we're using a triple basket with a 20g dose

2- Prep Portafilter:

  • Ensure your portafilter basket is dry and clean
  • Place it on a digital scale such as the Acaia Lunar
  • Tare to zero

3- Grind Beans:

  • Use the Eureka Oro Mignon XL Espresso Grinder to grind 20g of fresh coffee beans to a fine consistency
  • Grind directly into the portafilter

4- Weigh and Confirm Dose:

  • Place the portafilter back on the scale to ensure the dose is correct
  • Adjust if necessary

5- Distribute Grounds:

  • Gently tap the sides of the portafilter to evenly distribute the grounds
  • Ensure a level surface without cracks

6- Tamp Evenly:

  • Using a tamper, press down with consistent, gentle pressure
  • Ensure the coffee bed is level and compact

7- Prepare Espresso Machine:

  • Ensure the LUCCA M58 Espresso Machine is fully warmed
  • Run water through the group head to heat and cleanse it

8- Insert Portafilter:

  • Secure the portafilter into the machine's group head with a snug fit
  • Avoid over-tightening

9- Begin Extraction:

  • Place your espresso cup/shot glass and scale on the drip tray
  • Engage the machine's pump to start extracting your espresso while timing the shot

10- Monitor and Stop:
- Watch for a yield of 30g on the scale, adhering to the 1:1.5 ratio
- The total extraction time should ideally be between 25-30 seconds
- Stop the shot once you reach your yield

Cooking Tips

  • Freshness Matters: Use beans roasted between 5-14 days prior for optimal flavor.
  • Consistency is Key: Focus on consistent tamping pressure rather than intensity for even extraction.
  • Grind Adjustment: Adjust grind size daily as coffee ages to maintain extraction time within the ideal window.
