How To Pull A Lungo Using A Breville Barista Express
A Lungo, which means "long" in Italian, is an espresso-style coffee that captures the full-bodied essence of a standard espresso but with a milder, more extended flavor profile. By perfecting the extraction process using the Breville Barista Express, you can enjoy a less intense yet still robust coffee experience.
Ingredients
☕️ 18g Joe's Fine Coffee - Mt. Shuksan Blend whole coffee beans medium roast
💧 Water part of the Breville Barista Express reservoir
Instructions
1- Weigh the Coffee Beans:
- Using your kitchen scale, place a small metal cup on it and tare the scale.
- Measure exactly 18g of Joe's Fine Coffee beans.
2- Prepare the Espresso Machine:
- Add the weighed beans to the hopper of your Breville Barista Express.
- Ensure the portafilter has a double-shot basket properly inserted.
3- Grind the Beans:
- Position the portafilter under the machine's grinder.
- Set the grind size to 6, which is recommended for a Lungo.
- Grind the beans directly into the portafilter.
4- Tamp the Coffee:
- Use the integrated tamper in your Breville machine to compress the coffee evenly, making sure the surface is level and compact.
5- Set Up for Extraction:
- Insert the portafilter into the machine's group head securely.
- Position a shot glass or cortado glass on the kitchen scale, and tare the scale under the portafilter.
6- Start Manual Extraction:
- Activate manual mode by pressing and holding the double-cup button.
- Start a timer simultaneously to monitor the extraction time.
7- Monitor and Stop Extraction:
- Extract until you reach around 54g of espresso output with a 1:3 ratio with your 18g input.
- The extraction should take approximately 25-30 seconds. Once the desired weight is achieved, press the double-cup button to stop.
