People Won't Need to Be Forced to Vote If the System Is Fair

The political system in my country is nothing to write home about. Everyone is corrupt from the top to the bottom. Even the citizens are corrupt; they just do not have the opportunity to loot like those at the top, which is why they are always crying. Give them that opportunity, and you will see that they are worse than our leaders. You can see this in the way some of them handle things as citizens, through their greed and insatiable desires.

Many of us do not believe in the voting system of our country, and this is because we believe it has been rigged. That is what stops most people from voting. People will support a candidate online, but when you ask them if they have a voter card or if they are going to vote, that is when you start hearing excuses like, "I have never voted in my life," "I do not have time to go and collect my voter card," or "My vote does not count because the system has been rigged."

I am among those who give excuses for not voting, and I have also never voted in my life because I do not believe in the system. I believe those in power already know who will win, and the voting process is just a facade to fool the citizens. I refuse to be taken as a fool by those old men.

During the last election, many people were shouting "Obi" online and also vowed to vote for him. However, on election day, a lot of things happened. Some thugs came out and started threatening people to vote for the current president, telling them that if they were not going to vote for him, they should go home without voting. It is surprising that a country governed by law allowed such a thing to happen. But when it comes to supporting those in power, who can question them? This is one of the reasons most people think voting in this country is a joke, because why would they even allow such a thing to happen?

The current president even boasted that whether we voted for him or not, he was going to win. Just imagine that level of confidence. It means he was well prepared and knew he would win. Contestants should be anxious until the end of the voting process and the announcement of the results, but things in my country always seem to be different.

The majority of Nigerians do not vote. If there were a system that forced people to vote, it could only make sense if we were guaranteed a free and fair election. Not just a promise, but one hundred percent certainty that it would be fair and that the people were truly electing their leaders through their votes.

This would motivate citizens because they would know that their votes really count and that the election is not just a facade.

The only thing stopping me from voting is the unfairness of the system. If that is overruled, I will vote, and I believe many other people will also vote. We all want a better country where everything works as it should.

So, forcing people to vote will not be necessary if there is fairness in the system. We will vote.
