Beware
Beware is such an amazing painting for demonstrating how color and composition can dictate the experience of artwork. Immediately the eye is drawn to the human subjects in the foreground, with their body language imparting a feeling of curiosity or adventure in the sunset bathed forest. The eye then moves toward the background of the image, with the thinning trees and warm colors of a dusk or twilight. After a few seconds, or even minutes, it is only then when you recognize the pair of white eyes between the branches of the second leftmost foreground tree, at which point the entire painting is recontextualized from curiosity to near desperation.
