Cotton Armistice

In a house with a new kitten, silence is never a sign of peace; it's usually irrefutable proof of a crime in progress. Those of us who share our lives with these miniature felines know that silence has textures: there's the silence of stalking, the silence of forbidden exploration, and finally, the most suspicious of all… the silence of "atonement."

Upon entering the living room, I stopped in my tracks, for there, in the centre of his brand-new bedroom—a bed with plush edges and embossed fabric that still bears the "Pet Supplies" label like a brand-new trophy—rested Milo. Or at least, that's what he wanted me to believe.

The scene is worthy of a postcard of absolute serenity. Milo has become a small, greyish "cinnamon roll" on a brown plush cushion. His tabby stripes curve along the line of his spine, creating a hypnotic pattern of shadows and silver. His pink nose is tucked between his paws, and his eyes are sealed shut with a force that strikes me as, to say the least, theatrical—he purrs.

Ten minutes earlier, the scene was quite different. Milo had discovered that the dining room curtains weren't just decorative fabrics, but mountains of silk designed to be climbed. The clatter of a toppled flowerpot and the trail of dirt on the grey carpet are still fresh in my mind. However, when he was caught, the little strategist applied the "Law of Sudden Sleep." It's that astonishing feline ability to go from absolute chaos to the deepest lethargy in a matter of seconds, assuming that no one is capable of scolding a creature who looks like an angel fallen from cat heaven.

I glance at the tag hanging from the bed. It says a lot about us humans: we buy palaces of fabric for beings who often prefer a cardboard box. But today, Milo has decided to accept the tribute. He looks so small in that vast expanse of beige and white squares, so vulnerable despite his hidden claws, that one forgets his mischief.

In a world that seems to have lost interest in subtlety, where haste blinds us to the beauty of the everyday, this image is incredibly tender. It's more than a sleeping cat; it's mischief. Milo, with his rhythmic breathing and feigned post-disaster amnesia, forces me to lower my guard.

I approach stealthily, careful not to break the spell. I know that as soon as I move away, an ear will twitch slightly, an eye will open barely a millimetre to verify that the danger of a scolding has passed, and then the grey whirlwind will be back in action. But for now, in this cotton-cotton truce, the world is perfect. He'll surely keep me company for the last World Cup match. Congratulations, Spain, great job.
