Talking about ‘the wrong police officer or officers’ is more than just a phrase; it is the crack through which public trust is bleeding away. In the landscape of fear, the uniform can be a refuge or an ambush. My niece Gilda, from the chaotic streets of Caracas, tells me of a sinister new phenomenon: the policolectivos. These are armed groups that usurp authority, wearing the uniform not to serve, but to subjugate under the cover of a shared impunity fuelled by the state. It is corruption incarnate, a cancer that eats away at institutions until the protector becomes a predator.
Travelling north across the map is like stepping into another dimension. Here in Canada, the figure of the police officer occupies a different spectrum. It is not an imposition of force, but an academic pursuit. Being a police officer is a professional career, forged in classrooms and under rigorous ethical standards. Exemplary training transforms the weapon into a last resort and the spoken word into a tool for assistance.
That is the paradox of the ‘wrong sort of police officer’. Whilst in some corners of the world the badge is a symbol of pride and public service, in others it is a mask for personal gain or that of the powerful. When justice bows to self-interest, the citizen is left defenceless. It is not just about laws, but about humanity. The difference between a guardian and an executioner lies in the honesty of the person wearing the badge.

POLICOLECTIVO
