For the first time my brother-in-law who is outside the island returned to her parents to celebrate Chinese New Year with her family. After 3 years of not being able to go home to his parents because of covid 19 and this is the first time we as a family can get together even though he came alone not with his wife's children, but my father-in-law is very happy to see his son can come home to celebrate here.

Yesterday there were about 30 more people gathered at our house because we were open house for the whole family because my mom's is the oldest sister so it is our tradition to gather at the oldest person's house. There were nieces and nephews, our cousins who couldn't come to gather with us because they had their own events with their families, so they only called to wish us a happy Chinese New Year. Maybe 50 people would have come if they could have come.

We, as the hosts, served Lontong Opor and basket cake steamed in coconut milk, which we eat once a year. And some of the other families brought hisit as well as iced fruit and mahling soup(pork). We eat simple meals as long as we can gather and tell each other stories.

Even my mum's sister's family, who lives in the UK, came back to Indonesia to celebrate with us. This year we really didn't expect to be able to get together with family that we rarely know, and we haven't seen for several years.

My family lives in Semarang. My mum's eldest son lives in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara and my sister's family lives in Jogjakarta and Magelang. There is also a son of my sister who lives in the UK for college and is already working there.
We also distributed angpao to the nieces and nephews who came and also gave angpao to parents and families who needed help. Which is a tradition for us.

Chinese New Year (CNY) is the most important celebration for Chinese people around the world. And the most anticipated celebration is gathering with family to celebrate the Chinese New Year usually, we visit the oldest family either Grandma or Grandpa who are still alive usually we gather and eat cooking, even though some are still praying for their dead ancestors.

Because we rarely get together the next morning we went to buy Semarang's speciality souvenirs, namely lunpia and Presto milkfish and also we ate durian with my whole family.
