We live in a world where words and criticism abound. According to The Three Agreements, learning not to take anything personally—as outlined in Agreement Number II—invites us to live a life filled with inner peace. The truth is, this isn’t something we learn easily, nor is it something we’re taught from a young age, so we often grow up without understanding it.
Some time ago, I used to react badly to criticism and other people’s opinions, but as I matured, I learned that this is wrong. As the book says, people speak from their own shortcomings, and one must have very high self-esteem and ignore criticism that leads nowhere, since what they say is a reflection of their own reality.
These days, you see a lot on social media of how people reflect who they are. I’ve seen many hurtful comments on various posts—criticism that isn’t healthy or constructive—but reacting to them is a waste of time and gives importance to something that doesn’t deserve it, because if you know your worth and who you are, that criticism has no effect. Not long ago, I saw a girl who, after receiving several criticisms from one person and not reacting to any of them, finally responded with a video addressing what the person was criticizing. In my opinion, she didn’t react badly, since she spoke about a condition she suffers from. The thing is, people have become—or already are—so insensitive that they don’t understand what others might be going through.
Some of the most hurtful criticisms and words come from the people closest to us, but not reacting helps maintain unity. Often, people speak out of frustration or their own problems, but we shouldn’t pay too much attention to that. I know it hurts because that criticism cuts deep into the soul, but we must address their words without taking them personally—we know who we really are.
To ensure that criticism doesn’t affect you, you need to work hard on your self-esteem—knowing who you are and what you’re worth—so that nothing can hurt you. This is important, which is why I always try to teach my children how valuable they are so they grow up with strong self-esteem, and I always try to strengthen my own as well.
Not taking anything personally is something that takes time. I’ve learned this through maturity and have come to understand that I don’t care what people say because I know who I am, where I come from, and what I’m worth. What people say doesn’t define me, because for me, God has given me a priceless identity.
