Nights On The Line

The fact that it's not been up to a month I've been here is a kinda shocking because it sure feels longer with all the experiences so far. In my previous post I mentioned I finally got a job and that job has been a literal pain in the back and the cause of sleepless nights.

I've been doing night shifts at a warehouse and I chose to do four consecutive nights which was shocking to everyone else but me. Little did I know how intense the job was, my first shift made me feel like it wasn't so bad. On my last shift, I couldn't take it anymore and I had to cancel tonight's shift. I wouldn't want to end up on a stretcher all because I'm desperately in need of money.

Anyway, I resume school soon and will have limited hours to work which will be properly spaced out so I can rest properly from this hard labour of a job. It is the hardest physical work I've ever done in my life and my only motivation is the money I get at the end of the week.

I'm not one to doze off in buses or other public places but this new level of stress knows no bounds as far as sleep is concerned. I sleep in the company's cafeteria and in the bus with reckless abandon. I always fear I'd miss my busstop but I miraculously always wake up once we're at my stop.

I get home and fall in bed immediately, trying to catch as much sleep as I can before my next shift, but not without dreams of trying to catch up with the line. If you're not familiar with food production factories, a line is basically a point in the factory where food is made in mass production using various equipment and manpower. It is a fast paced environment so you always have to catch up to keep the line going.

So I've been having these jolts in my sleep when my subconscious feels like I'm on the line. It's funny but not funny, I don't like it when any form of work affects me this much, and this is both physical and mental. It helps that I was very aware of the concept of survival jobs before I came, I wasn't so shocked about the hard labour, but I swear, I don't want to be on the line for long.
