Best Advice Ever Received

I've received a ton of advice in my over 2 decades alive and 95% of them is unsolicited and stupid. When you're Nigerian + a growing female, you're bound to receive a lot of 'advice' from older people. You're some sort of community project and everyone feels they can drop their two cents on you whenever.

Now if it was some valuable advice, I wouldn't be complaining. It's never about making wise investment when you're young or words that makes you push harder in life, it's always about marriage and not getting pregnant before marriage. They talk like the sole reason for my existence is to find a good man and have a 'good home'. It's either that or "don't get pregnant before marriage".

I won't lie, such advice is very tiring to hear and my brain zones out whenever it comes my way. Especially since it'd be seen as disrespectful to shut these people up. Only recently did my dad talk to me about investments and it felt good to hear something like that for a change.

Recently a wise man talked to me about my decision making. Most of my decisions are geared towards pleasing my parents as the good child that I am and it usually doesn't sit well with me. The wise man told me that as much as I please people, I should remember that it is my decision. If I choose to go by their rules and it flops, it all comes back to me as 'MY' decision and 'I' would be held accountable.

I sat back and looked at my life and realized this is so true. Over and over I do what my parents want and when it doesn't turn out well, I still take all of the blame. So much for going by their rules hey?

So moving forward, I have to make my decisions based on what I want.
