"Leave a place better than you found it," Mama's favorite words.

I never knew if she borrowed it from a book of notable quotations, but it’s something she always said to us, and still says. Every morning in the tea fields, as she guided us through our work, she’d repeat it, not just to encourage excellence on the farm, but as a kind of reminder: how you treat a place will come back to you.

In the fields, she’d say, “Leave a place better than you found it. Don’t think that if you leave stumps lying around, they won’t haunt you. You’ll return to those same stumps, and complaining won’t help. So make it right now, for the sake of tomorrow.”

This quote stays with me every day. It helps me leave behind a trail of goodness wherever I go. I always remind myself: tomorrow, I might come back to this. So I’d better make it easier, by doing a good job today, for the sake and ease of tomorrow.
