He visto potenciales compradores llegar ilusionados.

Chronicles of the Absurd #23
Value
Hello dear @holos-lotus community, I am back once again to share a new entry in this series:
Chronicles of the Absurd.
This is a series of chronicles about everyday life, about those situations that repeat themselves so often that they stop seeming strange. There is no exaggeration or forced fiction here. The absurd is not invented; it is observed. These texts are born from daily experiences, from waiting, from senseless rules, and from behaviors that we all recognize but rarely question. They do not seek to provide answers, only to pause for a moment and look closely at what we have learned to accept.
In this twenty-third edition, the topic is:
Value.

For the past few years I have lived in one of the four high-rise buildings in the city of Matanzas. It was built at the end of the last century and, although its design could hardly be described as beautiful, it has always seemed to me a solid and functional construction.
It also has something no architect can design.
It faces the sea.
From its balconies you can admire the Bay of Matanzas, a view that changes constantly with the light, the clouds, and the condition of the water. There are sunrises and sunsets that alone make living there worthwhile.
That is why I have always considered it a privileged place.
And yet there is something I have never fully understood.
Many of the people who live in the building seem to act against their own interests.
Some throw garbage from windows or balconies without caring where it lands.
Others walk their pets and allow them to relieve themselves in stairways or common areas without bothering to clean up afterward.
Some carry out repairs in their apartments and leave debris wherever it is most convenient.
And there are also those who seem to believe that everything beyond their apartment door belongs to someone else.
The curious thing is that almost everyone wants to live in a clean, pleasant, and well-maintained place.
And many of them hope to sell their apartments one day for the highest possible price.
That is where the absurdity appears.
Because the value of a home does not depend only on the walls inside it.
It also depends on everything around it.
The entrance.
The stairways.
The hallways.
The overall condition of the building.
And the impression a visitor receives when arriving for the first time.
I have seen potential buyers arrive full of enthusiasm.
They like the location.
They are impressed by the view.
They find the apartments attractive.
But then they begin to notice other details.
The dirt.
The deterioration.
The neglected common areas.
And suddenly the enthusiasm is no longer quite the same.
The most striking thing is that those who contribute to that deterioration are often the same people who later complain that apartments are worth less than they should be.
As if the two things were unrelated.
There is another curious detail.
Garbage thrown from a window does not disappear by itself.
Sooner or later someone has to pick it up.
And that person is rarely a stranger.
Usually it is another neighbor.
Someone who lives in the same building.
Someone who uses the same elevator.
Who enjoys the same view.
Who probably knows and greets the person who created the problem.
It is a strange situation.
Because no one is damaging someone else's property.
They are damaging a shared space.
A place that belongs, in one way or another, to everyone who lives there.
Perhaps that is why this situation has always seemed absurd to me.
Because it is difficult to understand how someone can admire the view from their balcony while contributing to the deterioration of the place from which they admire it.
Because it is strange to want something to have value while actively helping reduce that value.
And because few contradictions are as obvious as harming oneself while believing the harm is being done to someone else.
This concludes the twenty-third chronicle. Thank you for reading and I look forward to your comments.
