🇺🇸 ~ Last month I started drawing again. A few years ago, I used to challenge myself to draw at least once a day in October (for InkTober), but I eventually stopped, mainly due to a lack of motivation.

I remember that over the last two years I have done some sketches or drawings, but always as guides or to clarify an idea for something I wanted to sew or craft, jotting down notes here and there about measurements and materials so I wouldn’t forget.

But drawing just for the sake of drawing? Not until today. That’s what I’m getting back into, and I’m really enjoying it. Even though I’ve forgotten how to draw hands and struggle with proportions, I don’t feel frustrated or feel the urge to erase lines “until it looks right.” I do the best I can, and I’m okay with that.

A recap of my “status” so far, as I try to make progress: I’ve been watching some videos on methods for improving my drawing:

I notice there are many different approaches; some say you should focus first on the basics as an essential foundation regardless of the drawing style you want to develop, while others say you should focus on drawing only what you like over and over again, assuring that through repetition, there will be refinement in both your skills and the quality of the subject you chose.

✦ I’m also finally using some chocolate-colored cream chalks, even though this isn’t the best use for them—but I’m determined not to let anything sit in a drawer for years ✦

✦ The materials I'm using are very simple, and I still prefer mechanical pencils. Have you tried those endless pencils? They're sold as kids' items, but I love them—they're the equivalent of a good-quality HB pencil ✦

A friend recommended that I look for Andrew Loomis's books, and I managed to find eight of them in PDF format. I've barely had time to skim through one, but the few pages I saw convinced me that I do want to consider studying the basics from the beginning, even though I still want to doodle without setting my sights too high.

Lately, I’ve also been wondering how my illustrator and artist friends are doing—the ones who draw professionally and rely on it as their main source of income. How do they manage their time, for example? On a Reddit thread from Venezuela, I see several artists sharing their work and asking the community if they think they’re ready to take on commissions.

That got me thinking—I never considered that a good artist might question the quality of their work, though I have been present during conversations about how to estimate the value of commissions.
