Hiking Day @ Cherokee Rock Village

Today, I took my wife and kids on a hike in and around one of my favorite places in Alabama Cherokee Rock Village (known to locals as Sandrock).

This place is a camper, hiker, and climbers dream. This 200-acre public park located in northeastern Alabama in Cherokee County, near the town of Leesburg. Also known as Sandrock, Little Rock City, and Sand Rock, Cherokee Rock Village sits atop a large outcropping on the southern end of Lookout Mountain, overlooking Weiss Lake.

Natural arches, caves, and huge freestanding sandstone islands rise overhead a maze of passages and overhangs. Its most notable features are massive, house-sized sandstone boulders and stone formations up to 200 feet high that date back 300 million years to the Pennsylvanian Period.

Having the kids today, I wasn't able to to make some of the climbs up to my favorite views and sitting spots. It was too much fun showing the kids the natural bridges, Indian marker trees, and a Cherokee cold room they used to keep food at lower temperatures.

If you could imagine God dumping a bucket of rocks on the top of a mountain, Sandrock is what you'd get.
