Cave Exploring In Alabama

Brother Jon, my dad, I took a little trip to Jackson County Alabama to explore some little known caves in the area. We traveled to a place called Steven's Gap near lake Guntersville and spent the day exploring.

First we hiked in about 1.5 miles up small creek valley covered in waiste high vegetation.

Halfway up the trail we noticed that there were holes in the forest floor with seemingly no bottom.

We slowly made the trek upwards from there to the mouth of a giant cave.

The temperature outside was a wet 85 degrees while the air coming out from the inside of the cave was 60 degrees or cooler. This made a really nice steam layer hang in the air. It looked mystical.

We got our gear and ventured in to the cave and it was like nothing I've ever seen.

A giant 80ft waterfall was falling into the earth and disappearing underneath our feet. Other small waterfalls came from the back of the cave and were rushing in streams to flow back in to the Earth in the same location.

We are going to explore some more caves this week. Stay tuned.
