Spring Snow Flurries - Cold Frames & Greenhouse Update - by Sunscape

I woke up to the snow falling once again. Seriously? It was 60°F. yesterday and we were working in the gardens all day long.

We put the heavy plastic on the hoop frames knowing it was going to be cold for a few more days. This way the soil stays a bit warmer and besides I had separated the cabbage that made it over the winter and wanted to protect them a bit. They are tucked in for a few days and should be fine.

This is only the second time in 28 years that I have had snow after putting the plastic on top of the frames. I knew another deep cold week was ahead and held off planting all the cabbages from the greenhouse. They are ready to be put into this frame, but I don't want to set them back, so now we wait.

I did plant out the Cilantro a few days ago and some beets have sprouted. Hopefully they will be fine.

I didn't protect them very well so this will be a real test for them.

It was a good day to harvest some of the #hydroponic spinach and the Asian spinach growing in the towers.

I cut back the largest leaves and left the small ones to continue growing. I'm thinking I should start another round of spinach seedlings and some Asian greens while the weather is still cool enough for them to do well.

After washing the leaves in the salad spinner, I laid them out to let them dry a little. Then they went onto a large cookie sheet and into the freezer for a future meal.

It is still snowing as I'm writing this post, and it may continue throughout the day. The greenhouse is holding a 60°F. temperature with one milk heater running. I did have to bring my tray of Basil back into the house, it wasn't too happy being out there.

It would be so nice if Spring would arrive and stay, wouldn't you agree?

Until next time, this is Sunscape
