Another Month Almost Over - Garden Update - by Sunscape
The summer bloomers are starting to add more color to the garden scape. The one thing that surprises me the most, is that I have yet to see butterflies. Only the ones that I released, and that was only for a couple of days.
I did, however, see the hummingbirds drinking from the fuchsia planted in the container garden. That was so nice to notice.
All the nasturtiums planted are beginning to bloom. I should pick a few flowers for a salad today. I really enjoy the peppery flavor they add.
The arugula in the hanging basket has gone to flower. I'm going to save some of the seed to plant later this summer for a fall harvest.
Another plant that is done is all the Cilantro. It was a very short season for it. I may try starting another round in a shady area to have on hand to make salsa this summer.
Marjoram in the tower garden has filled in nicely and needs to be trimmed back to dry. The green beans are filling out as well, and I can see little flowers starting to form. I have some empty spots and will put more seed in today.
I found some cherry tomatoes this week, yay! Soon I will get to have them every day with my lunch. The sweet potatoes have filled in, and I am going to start enjoying some of the tender leaves, too.
I tied up the sweet peppers to stakes and string this week after I trimmed off the lower leaves so the plants' energy focuses on fruiting. The zucchini got a lot of the largest leaves taken off, too. Now the bees can see the flowers to pollinate more easily.
Both the black and cocozelle varieties are full of flowers, and I do see that a lot of them are forming zucchinis. That will keep me busy in the kitchen, I imagine.
I finally see a few pea pods on the plants. Something had begun eating the tops of them once they started climbing. I put down some diatomaceous earth and more crushed eggshells. So far, I haven't seen any new damage. I'm thinking that I won't waste my time growing them next year, as I don't have enough space to accumulate a lot of peas for meal saving.
The onions took a beating from the high winds and rainstorm last week. I'm going to trim them some this morning before the heat of the day begins. The Jalapeno peppers are setting flowers, and I also need to get those staked too. There is always something to do in the gardens, right?
It is already getting warm, so I will have to share more of the update later this week. I need to get out and get to work. Have a wonderful day, everyone.
