Tears (ENG / SPN)

Yesterday, I saw a fellow Venezuelan woman on Instagram who had emigrated to Chile to work, send money home, and feed her family—three children and her mother, if I recall correctly. She was an ordinary, hardworking woman who had to leave behind what she held most dear and go to a foreign country—a place where, incidentally, there is a great deal of xenophobia toward Venezuelans—yet she managed, however difficult the circumstances, to work and support her children and her mother.

Ayer veía en Instagram a una compatriota venezolana, quien había emigrado a Chile a fin de trabajar, poder enviar dinero y alimentar a su familia: Si mal no recuerdo eran tres hijos y su mamá. Una mujer común, trabajadora, quien tuvo que dejar atrás lo más preciado, ir a un país extraño, en donde, dicho sea de paso, existe mucha xenofobia hacia el gentilicio venezolano, pero que mal que bien trabajaba para mantener a sus hijos.

She was interviewed by a foreign journalist—a Mexican—who spoke with her in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes (while she was still in Chile) and interviewed her again after she had arrived in Venezuela. I do not know this woman, yet it was impossible not to feel her pain. She wept bitterly and sorrowfully over her loss, as both her three children and her mother had died in the earthquakes. I cannot fathom the pain, anguish, and sadness this person was experiencing. She spoke of the pain she felt as a mother, but also as a daughter, for she had lost all those bonds—she had lost her entire family. She was left practically without a past, a present, or a future—without a home, without reasons to live. I hope God helps her.

Ella era entrevistada por un periodista mexicano, quien habló con ella en las primeras horas después de los terremotos, (estando aún en Chile), y luego la volvió a entrevistar cuando ya había llegado a Venezuela. No conozco a esta señora, pero era imposible no sentir su dolor. Ella lloraba amarga y tristemente por su pérdida, ya que tanto sus tres hijos, como su madre habían muerto en los terremotos. No puedo dimensionar el dolor, la angustia, la tristeza de esta persona. Ella decía que sentía dolor como madre, pero también como hija, pues perdió todos estos vínculos, perdió a toda su familia. Ella prácticamente quedó sin pasado, sin presente, sin futuro, sin hogar, sin motivos para vivir. Espero que Dios la ayude.

Just like the moving case of this woman, one can see thousands of similar stories—both firsthand and on social media. People who are devastated, desperate, sad, frightened, and in anguish... there are so many tears, so much pain. Tears are what abound in Venezuela right now—tears that will one day demand an answer.

Así como el conmovedor caso de esta mujer, tanto en directo como en redes, es posible ver miles de historias similares. Personas desoladas, personas desesperadas, tristes, asustadas, angustiadas… hay muchas lágrimas, hay mucho dolor. Lágrimas es lo que abunda ahora en Venezuela, lágrimas que algún día deberán tener respuesta.
