Senior Citizens Explore Leavenworth, Washington
Day Two of our adventure was spent exploring the town of Leavenworth, WA. Over 100 years ago, this little timber town was home to the second largest sawmill in the state. Later, it became the headquarters of the Great Northern Railway. When the railroad headquarters moved to Wenatchee in the 1920s, Leavenworth began to struggle to survive. In the 1960s two Seattle businessmen came up with the idea of turning Leavenworth into a Bavarian-themed town. As the saying goes, the rest is history! The main downtown area now looks like it came straight from Germany.
Sometimes live music is on the schedule for this cute little pavilion.
See the sign for the Gingerbread Shop? You can be sure we went in there!
These were on display in the entrance to the gingerbread shop....
And so was this amazing gingerbread hat!
I bought a frosted gingerbread squirrel cookie to eat. And it was very tasty!
I neglected to take a photo of the sign above our favorite shop, the Cup and Kettle Tea Shop, but my brother-in-law took a photo of my sister in front of the store, and that will do the trick!
A person can only go through so many shops filled with gifts and gadgets, so it was a welcome change of pace to walk across a little bridge and explore Blackbird Island. The views of the mountains and the Wenatchee River are spectacular!
A man-made pond on the island is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
