Eager to run out screaming [Esp/Eng]
I don't think this was the post I wanted to start my return to blogging with, but I've been mulling it over for days, trying to figure out what to write. So far, nothing had come to mind that would fit into my schedule, but then two very emotional days passed, and I stopped to realize that this was definitely going to be cathartic.
After all, where else can you vent a little through writing?
Being a teacher in Venezuela these days is no easy task, as you have to be extremely careful not to make even the slightest mistake to avoid any kind of awkward situation.
Up until now, in the two years I’ve been teaching, nothing out of the ordinary had happened to me—until yesterday, when one of my students kicked a classmate in the mouth, causing a bruise on his chin, a cut on his lip, and apparently loosening his front teeth.
Oh, my God! What an awkward situation, because the very child who caused the incident is someone I’ve had to take to the school counselor many times and keep a close eye on to prevent him from hurting any of his classmates. Well, the very incident we were trying so hard to avoid has happened. Because of this, I’ve repeatedly requested additional support from a teacher in my classroom, since I have three children with special needs and two who are very aggressive, but I’m still waiting for my request to be addressed.
When I saw the child lying on the floor, frightened by the blood gushing from his mouth, I think I went into a kind of shock because so many terrible images flashed through my mind, but I had to act quickly to get him out of there, clean him up, and sit him at my desk so I could turn on a fan to calm him down while his guardian came to pick him up.
At that moment, I felt very angry with the children involved because I had left them organized, with a really nice activity to do, and because just that very morning I had spoken to them about behavior, about supporting one another because we had children with special needs, and to see that those involved had ignored my instructions and gotten up to play a fighting game— Oh my God! I felt my blood boiling, but I had to control myself so as not to do something reckless.
All I could do was call the parents in and file a report on the children regarding the incident, as well as ask them to please be prepared in case we had to cover any of the child’s medical expenses.
When the workday ended, I came home and spent the whole day thinking about the accident, about what happened, about seeing the boy there, all scared and covered in blood.
Later, I received a message from the boy—who, by the way, is currently out of the country. He wrote to me in a very angry, threatening tone, which made me even more anxious, thinking I might face some kind of lawsuit and end up who knows where. So I spent the whole afternoon and most of the night with my head full of thoughts about what might happen, until today came and, at school, we met again with the boy’s representative, who asked us to speak via video call with the boy’s father, who is also out of the country, and fortunately, we were able to speak with him, clarify the situation a bit, and finally take responsibility for covering the cost of the child’s medication so he can get better.
I had no choice but to pay out of my own pocket to go to the pharmacy and buy some medicine, juices, and fruit purees so the child could at least have a snack or something to go with his meal, since the toothache prevents him from eating anything solid. Even though I made this great effort, I still feel that sense of danger that something might happen—and even if nothing does, I carry that worry in my head, the bitter taste of regret and a sense of guilt because it happened in my classroom, with my children, because I should have been more attentive, and because I felt that the child responsible for all this was someone whose parents are very laid-back, and I noticed that none of the parents showed any real concern about what happened or about trying to come up with the money for the medicine.
I’m not going to lie to you—it does hurt to have had to use money I’d set aside to cover college expenses (yes, I’m studying now, too)—but on the other hand, I put myself in that grandmother’s shoes (she’s the one who takes care of him); she probably didn’t have much at home either, and the right thing to do was to help her.
Anyway, this has been something that really knocked me down emotionally and has made me question myself a lot, and yes, many friends tell me these are just accidents that happen, but I can’t stop thinking that it could have been worse. Although, of course, I have to put on a friendly, strict face and act like someone who’s trying to mediate so that neither side gets hurt, but inside, my other faces are those of a little girl who can’t stop crying and just wants to disappear into the middle of nowhere to try to forget.
