If I could instantly master one skill, I would choose the skill of listening deeply. It may not sound like a skill but it is the most important thing in our life which we don't consider important. Being heard is very important for our own well being and also for the other person. Listening skills is like a small skill but it is one of the most powerful gifts.

As you guys already know that I am happily married and I have two young daughters who fill our home with laughter. Most of the time I am busy with my work and family duties. Not only that I have to worry about so many things. I often hear from people, that I do not always truly listen to them. For an example recently my younger daughter came home carrying a small paper bird she had made in school. I was checking my phone while she was talking. Suddenly she pulled my shirt and said "Dad, why are you not listening to me?" I smiled and said, "it's good," and I was using my phone once again. Later, my wife told me that our daughter had spent the whole week making that paper bird, she was patiently waiting to surprise me. I can't explain how bad I have felt after knowing that and I was really guilty for not having a look at it properly. I realized that people do not only want our words. They want our full attention and it is very important for every relationship. It could be the relationship of mother-son, father-daughter, husband-wife, brother-sister, lovers etc.

That is why I would choose to master the skill of listening. I want to understand not only what people say but also the depth of it. I want my daughters to know that their every little stories matter to me. I think when we listen to someone deeply they feel the importance. I want my wife to feel that she never has to repeat herself to be heard.

This skill would also help me outside my home. Many people carry silent pain. Sometimes when they share they do not need advice they just need someone who would quietly listen to them. I want to listen to these people without judging them harshly. If I could do that well, maybe I could make someone's difficult day better. Because we don't know what someone else is going through. In the end, I believe being fully present for the people we love is one of the greatest successes in life.
