๐ฆ The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
- Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptล to hit, beat
- major (lat.) big
Although woodpeckers feed on insects and their larvae, when autumn and cold weather arrive, the insects hide and it's not always possible to retrieve them from under the bark. Therefore, in addition to insects and berries, this species of woodpecker eats small conifer seeds.
He obtains them from under small pine cones. To do this, he chisels a convenient hole in the tree bark, into which he then inserts the plucked pine cone for convenience and pecks out the seeds.
And then in early spring, when the snow is actively melting, you can see the "traces of woodpeckers' work" under the trees.
