Birdwatching - 1889 🐦

🦉 The white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos)

  • Dendrocopos (Greek): dendron - tree, coptō - to hit, beat
  • leucotos (Greek): leukos - white, nōton - back

I took these photos at the very end of autumn, just before winter. I saw this guy sitting on a fallen tree and fidgeting around on it. There was a female nearby, but she was minding her own business.
This is one of the distinctive features of woodpeckers of this species. They love to inspect and look for food in dead rotten trees.

That is why they prefer to settle in places where there are a lot of old and fallen trees, where the territory is difficult to pass.
In addition, unlike, for example, the Great Spotted Woodpecker, these guys are less timid, and the fact that they “work” in the lower tiers of the forest makes them not difficult birds to photograph and observe.
