Drawing my friends' kid

A while back, my friend found a piece of artwork that reminded him of his wife. I didn't draw this, but he was using it as his phone background:

He wanted his wife to have a matching illustration of him, and commissioned me to draw it. I threw in their dog for good measure. I completed this back in 2015:

After that, they had a kid together. So, for her husband's birthday last month, my friend asked me to draw her kid in the same style. He's the cutest. I drew both of these illustrations (the husband and the kid) on a Surface Pro 3 in Photoshop.
For the kid, I used a photo reference for the initial sketch, and to grab the appropriate colors.

I can see that my drawing ability has improved in the last few years - or maybe I'm getting more used to the Surface. In any case, I had a lot of fun with this drawing and they both loved it!
