In this second installment, Detective Rizzoli takes center stage; Moore—the detective from the first book—becomes a secondary character, while new figures are introduced, such as the medical examiner Dr. Isles, who I suspect is destined to become a key character in the series. We find Rizzoli still traumatized by the "Surgeon" case, which left her with both physical and emotional scars. Yet, she doesn't let that stop her from investigating new cases. When Detective Korsac calls her in to assist with an investigation in another district—one that bears a striking resemblance to the Surgeon's crimes—she steps up, even though the original Surgeon is currently locked away in a maximum-security prison. In this new case, a killer tortures happy couples, kills the husbands, and abducts the wives, only to murder them later. Rizzoli battles her own memories while hunting this new killer—known as "The Dominator"—who seems to be mimicking the Surgeon's signature style and modus operandi. She works alongside a colleague who, while a simple man, is an excellent police officer. It becomes a race against time; the killer is cunning, methodical, and—naturally—cruel, continuing to claim victims and outmaneuver the police. Meanwhile, the Surgeon is plotting a diabolical escape from prison, intent on returning to the hunt for his favorite new prey: Detective Rizzoli herself.

Agent Dean stirs up doubts in Rizzoli but also sparks a powerful attraction; he is a charming man who understands human nature well, yet he is reluctant to be a team player and harbors too many secrets. Now there are two killers on the loose: The Surgeon and "The Dominator." What if they were to join forces? This is a fantastic, gripping, and suspenseful book—a gritty, compelling thriller you won't be able to put down. It features a new case, a new killer, and a cast of multifaceted characters—both old and new. I highly recommend it to thriller fans; in fact, I recommend the entire series—I’ll be reading the third book soon!
