Designer Babies: A Future I Hope Never Comes

Honestly, I’m very sure that if humans had the opportunity to modify the genes of their babies before they’re born, a lot of people would do that without blinking an eye.

They will go as far as making the babies look perfect and even look like superhumans; just think of anything that will make the baby have a great life in this world; they will do it as if they were the creators of the whole universe. That's us humans for you. And let me silently pray that technology wouldn't reach the point of us challenging the Creator's human lives because I don't know what our fate would be. I mean, gender selection is already enough, rather than going the extra length of gene modifications.

Regardless of all the ups and downs of life we go through as humans, imperfections remain one of the beauties of being a human; we just learn how to navigate our imperfections and keep living, but I can tell you that humans only accept all these imperfections here and there because there is nothing we can do but deal with them because it's beyond our power as humans. We can't change it, but imagine having the power to change our babies right from the womb; most parents wouldn't waste time to grab the opportunity.

A lot of parents are dealing with children with developmental issues; some are dealing with low-IQ kids, and these categories of children don't make their parents proud academically . If we can actually modify a lot, people will play God. Some dark-colored parents will also choose fair kids; that's even the least of them all. People will modify a lot about humans other than how God created us to be different.

I can also imagine parents modifying the genes of their babies to provide them with specific talents, exactly the type they have been admiring from afar. But then, life is unique, and it would be terrible to take away the uniqueness of life through gene modification. If we have an opportunity to change the genes of our babies, no doubt it would definitely bring a lot of improvement into the family. You can sit down and design what talent you want your child to possess. You can decide on any crazy gift that would make your child great and design him or her to possess such a gift and be perfect. You can just, in advance, eliminate any possible health challenges in the life of your unborn baby and enjoy peace of mind, and there are many more things we can modify and be happy about, but it would be great to respect God and be content with what He blessed us with.

I think we shouldn't strive for perfection but accept the uniqueness of life, journey with our children, and nurture them for who they are. Life will be more exciting, natural, and lively.

However, if only genetic modification is used strictly to prevent serious health challenges, especially hereditary diseases, then it's fair enough, and I can understand and key into the argument.

Overall, no matter the technology advancement, let's not allow our children to become products ordered from a catalog, as they are pure gifts from God without paying a kobo; they are not projects to be perfected and modified to suit our standards.
