The Best Financial Decision I Ever Made: Saying Yes to a Keke on Hire Purchase
There are moments in life when a single decision changes the course of your future. Looking back, I can confidently say that one of the best financial decisions I have ever made was accepting a keke (tricycle) on hire purchase in 2020.
At that time, I was a university graduate. Like many graduates in Nigeria, I had dreams of securing a white-collar job that matched my qualifications. Unfortunately, the job market was not as welcoming as I had hoped. Rather than sitting at home waiting for opportunities to come knocking, I decided to create one for myself.
When the opportunity to get a keke on hire purchase came, I knew it was a serious commitment. The thought of owing money was intimidating, and many people questioned whether it was the right move. Some believed that as a graduate, I deserved something "better" than operating a tricycle.
I chose to ignore the opinions of others and focus on the opportunity in front of me.
The early days were not easy. Every day required discipline, hard work, and consistency. I knew that if I became careless with the income I generated, I would struggle to meet the repayment schedule. So instead of spending recklessly, I prioritized paying off the hire purchase agreement.
Slowly but surely, each payment brought me closer to owning the keke outright.
The day I completed the payment remains one of my proudest financial achievements. Not only had I fulfilled my obligation, but I had also built an income-generating asset that continued to work for me.
That decision taught me lessons no classroom could ever teach.
First, I learned that income is more important than appearances. Society often places too much value on titles and status, but financial independence comes from having assets that generate cash flow, not from impressing people.
Second, I discovered the power of good debt. Not every debt is bad. Borrowing to acquire an asset that produces income can be a wise financial move when managed responsibly. The keke paid for itself and eventually became a source of profit.
Third, I realized that hard work and consistency beat excuses. There were difficult days, but giving up would have been far more expensive than persevering.
Finally, I understood that opportunities don't always arrive in attractive packages. Sometimes the opportunity that changes your life comes disguised as hard work, sacrifice, and a willingness to do what others are unwilling to do.
Today, when I reflect on that decision, I don't see just a tricycle. I see courage. I see discipline. I see financial wisdom. Most importantly, I see proof that taking calculated risks can produce life-changing results.
If I had waited for the "perfect" job, I might still have been waiting. Instead, I chose an opportunity that generated income, taught me responsibility, and helped me build financial confidence.
That keke was more than a means of transportation—it was my first real lesson in wealth creation.
Sometimes the best financial decision isn't the one that looks impressive to other people. It's the one that quietly changes your life.
