(Eng//Esp) The Day a Retail Store Refused My Bank Transfer: A Lesson Every Business Owner Should Learn// El día en que una tienda se negó a aceptar una transferencia bancaria: una lección que todo dueño de negocio debería aprender
There are moments in life that seem ordinary at first but end up teaching us something valuable. One of those moments happened to me recently when I walked into a small retail store just across the street from where I live.
I only wanted to buy a few items. The shopping experience was straightforward, and after the woman attending to the store calculated the total cost, I reached for my phone to make a bank transfer. Like many people today, I hardly move around with much cash because electronic payments have become part of my daily routine.
To my surprise, the elderly woman looked at me and calmly said, "I don't accept transfers. It has to be cash."
For a few seconds, I thought she was joking. In a time when almost every roadside vendor, kiosk owner, and supermarket displays account numbers or QR codes for payment, I found it difficult to believe that someone running a retail store would reject electronic payments altogether.
I had no option but to look for cash before I could complete the purchase.
As I walked away, one thought kept running through my mind: How many customers has this business lost simply because it refuses to adapt?
Of course, I understand that there could be reasons behind her decision. Perhaps she has been a victim of fake debit alerts before. Maybe she doesn't trust online banking, or she simply isn't comfortable using modern technology. Those concerns are understandable, especially for someone who did not grow up in the digital age.
However, understanding those reasons doesn't change the reality of today's marketplace.
Consumer behavior has changed dramatically. Many people no longer carry cash because transfers are faster, safer, and more convenient. Before leaving home, I often carry only my phone because I know I can pay for almost anything electronically. If I enter a store and discover that only cash is accepted, chances are I'll simply buy from another shop.
That isn't because I'm unwilling to pay. It's because convenience influences purchasing decisions.
One thing I noticed about the store was that it wasn't particularly busy. I can't confidently say that refusing transfers is the reason for the low customer turnout, because many other factors could be responsible. Pricing, product availability, customer service, and competition all play important roles in determining how successful a business becomes.
Still, refusing one of the most common payment methods in today's economy certainly creates an unnecessary obstacle.
As business owners, we often focus on improving our products while forgetting that the buying experience matters just as much. Sometimes growth doesn't require opening another branch or investing huge sums of money. Sometimes it simply requires making it easier for customers to pay.
The business world keeps evolving, and customers evolve with it. Those who embrace positive change position themselves for greater opportunities, while those who resist change may unintentionally push customers toward competitors.
My brief encounter with that elderly shop owner reminded me that every business should regularly ask one important question:
"Am I making it easy for people to buy from me?"
Sometimes, the answer to that single question can determine whether a business grows or gradually fades away.

"No acepto transferencias. Solo efectivo."
