The Hole Less Piped

Two holes converged on a yellow broad,
And sorry I could not pipe them both
And be one plumber, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the hollow void;

Then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was tighter and wanted wear;
Though as for that the piping there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that night equally lay
In fur no pipes had trodden wet.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how strokes leads on to strokes,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two holes converged in a butt crack, and I-
I piped the one less piped by,
And that has made all the difference.
