Rainy afternoons in June

I always remember June, not only because the rains begin in the city where I live, where the sun seems like an unmoving statue of the days, but also because it's the month of the birthday of someone I loved very much, who sadly passed away more than 15 years ago.

That person died of pancreatic cancer. It was the first time someone close to me had suffered from this disease, and I didn't know then how devastating and painful it could be. I remember that around that time, the famous actor Patrick Swayze and Steve Jobs suffered from the same cancer, and in one way or another, they brought to the world's attention how invasive and devastating this type of disease could be.

I remember that when this person found out about the diagnosis, they called me and, unable to string a sentence together, began to cry. No matter how much I asked them what was wrong, they couldn't tell me; I just heard them crying until they finally hung up. Later he sent me a message just telling me not to worry, that he would tell me later when we saw each other. That meeting happened a few days later, and although I was the one who started crying after he told me what was going on, he was the one who cheered me up because now I would need "my bad jokes and my scoldings," as he put it, to get through it.

Through him, I learned not only to have faith, hope, and pray for a miracle, but also to hide my tears, to encourage him, and to overlook his emaciation, his sallow complexion, his hair loss, and his body ravaged by the disease and chemotherapy. Despite his condition, we met every so often, and as if we’d agreed on it, we didn’t talk about his illness, but about pleasant things: movies, books, new places we might visit someday.

Only once, as he was nearing death, did the imminent end come up: “Don’t you dare start crying, or I’ll come back and take you with me.” He said it as a joke, trying to lighten the mood. I didn’t cry at that moment. What I did was respond with another joke, and we both laughed—half-heartedly, fearfully—as if neither of us wanted to be brave.

Every time June comes around and I see the rain, I remember that friend who said he’d come back if he saw me cry, and even the June clouds cry for him, yet he never comes back....💔
