No te lamentes

Don't lament it

I'm going to say something that might not be to everyone's liking, but I detest people who complain. I avoid them, I distance myself from them. People who spend their lives complaining about one thing or another—the heat, the price of things, their children or partner, their luck—make me cringe. They complain about everything. It's as if complaining is the soundtrack of their lives, the gray cloud they carry everywhere.

I've had friends, colleagues, and even partners who live in constant complaint, and I must confess, I've tried my best to avoid them. I remember a friend who, every time she called, it was to tell me negative things: her leg hurt, she went to the bank and they gave her money in small bills, the food she ate made her sick. She got annoyed because I always saw the positive side: "Well, at least you have money in the bank, or at least you have food. We should be grateful." I answered so as not to give her any more time to lament. I don't know if it was her or me, but one day we stopped calling each other and I was truly grateful.

Certainly, life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and many of us are going through negative and painful situations, so complaining or lamenting is probably justified at some point. What I can't understand is why people who have everything—a house, love, health, a job—complain about even the cold water they drink. How is it that, having everything, they still see the negative side of life?

Although comparisons are bad, when I encounter someone complaining about anything, I point out that there are many people around them in worse situations who don't complain about anything. I always give them the example of a student who had a leg amputated, and instead of lamenting or living bitterly, she was always grateful for the family she had and that thanks to having her leg removed, she was alive: "I'm grateful to be alive without a leg, because two legs wouldn't have been any use to me if I had died."

I've often read that complaining stems from discontent, and I can't think of a better way to overcome discontent than by doing, not just talking. What can I do to change what bothers me? For example, if I'm dissatisfied with my country's government, instead of complaining, I should look for ways to change it. If all the people who constantly complain would stop complaining and actually do something to change what bothers them so much, the world would undoubtedly be a different place.

I'm not saying we shouldn't point out the problems we have and only focus on the positive aspects: that's also wrong and absurd. But we can't go through life lamenting what we lack, what could have been, or what we could have done. If we do that, we'll not only wither away (people who complain age quickly), we'll also miss out on the chance to truly live, and we might even lose many friends, because nobody feels comfortable around someone who only sees the bad in the good, the dark in the light, the flaw in the wonderful. So the next time you think about complaining, ask yourself what you want. If you want pity, attention, or to scare people away: go for it.
