“One day at a time” is a phrase we must always keep in mind if we want to understand how the streets of Havana work. It’s a must-read, as a teacher at school once told me. |
|
Everyone lives day to day, a daily struggle, which is why it’s sometimes hard to understand the city’s dynamics while walking through it. |
|
Some say, “One more day, one less day”—though this last phrase conveys a great deal of despair, it is nonetheless part of everyday life for Cubans. |
|
But at the same time, all of this shapes who we are, how we live, and how we view the future. |
|
These are essential elements for understanding the street; that’s why I empathize when someone approaches me to ask what the photos are for. They have their questions, and they’re valid, given the circumstances we’re living through. |
|
And so we go on living, as part of this world that never stops for a moment and forces us to adapt or disappear—even though we Cubans are warriors of life. That’s who we are! |
