From up high, everything looks different./ Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

For several years now, I’ve been documenting life in Havana, especially in the most vulnerable neighborhoods, where everyday life takes on a different hue. Today we’ll shift our perspective: we’ll go up to the top of a family home in the Centro Habana neighborhood—my sister’s house.

Llevo varios años documentando la vida en la Ciudad de La Habana, especialmente en los barrios más vulnerables, donde la cotidianidad tiene otro color. Hoy cambiaremos la perspectiva: subiremos a lo alto de una vivienda familiar en el barrio de Centro Habana, la casa de mi hermana.

Life on the street is one thing, but what happens on the rooftops of these houses is something else entirely. The first thing that strikes me is that the noise isn’t as intense, and the landscape changes completely.

Una cosa es la vida en la calle y otra muy diferente es lo que sucede en las azoteas de estas casas. Lo primero que me llama la atención es que el ruido no es tan intenso, y el paisaje cambia por completo.

These buildings are over 100 years old and are constantly battling the force of gravity; the wear and tear on the walls is very visible—it’s like living skin; that’s the impression it gives me.

Estas edificaciones tienen más de 100 años y luchan constantemente contra la fuerza de gravedad; el desgaste en las paredes es muy visible, como si fuera piel viva, esa es la impresión que me da.

When I’m looking for inspiration, this is one of my favorite places: everything moves more slowly here, and it’s easier to think clearly. Plus, my sister is here—she knows I come up to work, and she always brings me a hot cup of coffee when I visit.

Para buscar inspiración, este es uno de mis lugares predilectos: aquí todo es más lento y se piensa mejor. Además tengo a mi hermana, que sabe que subo a trabajar y siempre me sube un cafecito caliente cuando la visito.

There’s also the custom of using part of this space as a storage area; sometimes people take it a bit too far, but it’s still a deeply rooted tradition, perhaps due to the lack of space.

También está la costumbre de utilizar parte de este espacio como trastero; a veces se exagera un poco, pero igual es una costumbre bien arraigada, tal vez por la falta de espacio.

The thing is, I was glad to discover that you can also do research here, because it’s one of the quietest spots in Havana life.

El caso es que me sentí bien al descubrir que aquí también se puede documentar, porque es uno de los espacios más tranquilos en la vida del habanero.

So when I’m not out on the street, you can find me on the rooftop, because everything looks different from up here.

Así que cuando no estoy en la calle, me pueden encontrar en la azotea, porque desde la altura todo se ve diferente.
