Should Voting Be Mandatory?

Voting is one of the most important things a citizen should participate in as a member of a particular country. We are in a democratic country where people vote for who they like. And this process only happens through elections, as there are different candidates going for any kind of posts. There are parties in, and there we are people in each of these parties that are willing to contest, and people are also willing to vote for them.

However, it is not all the people that vote when it's time for election; everyone has different opinions on voting. Some believe that the system doesn't work at all and there's no reason for them to even vote; some believe that their votes will not count, so they won't vote; some believe that either you vote or not, who will win will win, so they will also not vote. Meanwhile, some people are not chanced to vote; some don't even care to vote, as they do not have interest in anything like elections or politics. Now the real question is should voting be mandatory for every eligible person in the country?

Has good as that can be sounds, I don't think it's the best. Well, talking about compulsory votes from everyone, it has its own advantage. This policy will help every single person in the country to vote, unlike when people will choose to vote or not. They will have no choice but to vote because they know that if they don't vote, they will be punished.

Another benefit of this is that it will reduce the rate at which people buy votes. What do I mean by that? They pay some people to vote because, honestly, they don't have interest in voting. In that case of compulsory voting, you don't need to pay people for voting this time around.

Politics will then be balanced; every party will now be fighting for who to vote for them, since both rural and urban citizens will also be voting.

But then, looking at it from another angle, the disadvantages will be more than its advantages. Imagine people who are sick, imagine people who are blind, and imagine people who need to be somewhere every important day that if they are not there, it might take a life! Or should we say workers like doctors, lawyers and so on should not go to work just because it is a must for everyone to vote? What about people travelling on that very day? Compulsory votes cannot work.

The point is, if a country is working fine and there are no manipulations – I mean, when people vote, let them see the reasons why they voted. Because in some countries there are lots of manipulations, this is one of the reasons people don't like to vote when they do not see any good results.

In summary, forcing people to vote and punishing them if they do not doesn't seem right; people should have their own opinion on what they want to do. If they want to vote, they will; if they don't want to vote, then no problem. There is nothing bad if the government gives the citizens a reason to vote by telling them and preaching to them why they need to vote.
