What are production points in Splinterlands?

I noticed on @peakmonsters that there is a column called production points. What are production points? What determines the production point value? How is the information useful to cardholders? Can you give a few scenarios of when a @splinterlands player would consider production points when renting, selling or playing the game? Also, thanks to @reverio for this format to ask questions.
