Residue. A Five Minute Exploration.

Early every morning, Tony shuffled into the back of the cafeteria. Before the sun nudged against the skyline, he was finishing a bowl of Wheaties. Each fall, there was a new crop of student workers. Some were pretty, some were athletic and a few were smart. But none of them was anything like Tony. Most of the students would be assigned jobs on the front lines. If English was a second language, then they likely would end up with Tony in the washroom.

By winter break, half of the student employees would either be out of school or looking for work elsewhere. The cafeteria’s residue finally washed from their hair and the stench of lunch out of their nostrils. But not for Tony. He would be back after Winter Break, in fact, he never left. He was a full-time employee. He worked, he slept and he made friends that didn’t include a transient college crowd.
