A Brief Botanical Introduction

Lavender (genus Lavandula) is a hardy perennial herb native to the Mediterranean, but now cultivated globally. With its silvery-green foliage and iconic purple blooms, it’s not just a visual delight,it’s a powerhouse of wellness and versatility.

Lavender thrives in full sun, well-drained soil, and dry climates(making it ideal for water-wise gardens)

**Growing tips **

☀️ 1. Choose the Right Spot
Full sun is essential (lavender loves at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily)

🪨 2. Soil Matters
Lavender hates wet feet! Use well-draining soil, ideally sandy or loamy.

If your soil is clay-heavy, mix in coarse sand or small gravel to improve drainage.

Aim for a slightly alkaline pH (around 6.5–7.5). A sprinkle of garden lime can help.

🌱 3. Planting Tips
Space plants 30–45 cm apart to allow airflow and prevent fungal issues.

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth.

Mulch lightly with small stones or bark(not organic mulch, which retains moisture)

💧 4. Watering Wisely
Water deeply but infrequently(once a week is plenty once established)

Let the soil dry out between waterings. Overwatering is the #1 killer of lavender.

✂️ 5. Pruning for Power
After flowering (usually late summer), trim back by one-third to keep it bushy.

Avoid cutting into woody stems(new growth won’t sprout from old wood)

🐝 6. Companion Planting
Lavender pairs well with rosemary, thyme, and sage(great for pollinators and aesthetics)

It also repels mosquitoes and attracts bees, making it a garden multitasker.

🪴 7. Pot Growing Tips
Use terracotta pots with drainage holes(they breathe and prevent soggy roots)
