Polyphylla fullo

Night fell, I went out onto the terrace and turned on the light. There was a loud thud. I thought one of the ripe apricots nearby had fallen. But the sound was heard closer to the wall of the house. It was like a stone hitting the wall of the house. I turned on a few more lights to see what it was. I heard a squeaking, squeaking sound. I saw my little kitten hitting something or someone with its paw. I put it away. She's not hungry but she's very curious.

It was a big beetle. Unusual pattern like marble. Since it was in the corner I had to turn on a few more lights. To light it up enough to be able to photograph it. I had to take the kitten inside because it was persistent in trying to eat the beetle.

It is the Marbled Beetle (Polyphylla fullo).: The marbled beetle is the largest beetle species in Europe, and adults can grow up to 35–40 millimeters. It is recognized by its dark (black or dark brown) body color, which is dotted with specific white spots, resembling marble patterns, which is how it got its name.

Polyphylla fullo lives in North Africa, Europe and the Middle East. It is most common in Central and Southern Europe, but is not common anywhere. It is most often seen during June and July, especially near pine forests and on sandy soils. Here in my area there are no pine forests but there is a lot of sandy soil.
