Hello everyone! 🖐

On this occasion, I’d like to share with you some fan art of the character Xolo by @holozing. As a way of practising and experimenting, I wanted to try out the ‘rendering’ technique, which is widely used in concept art, 3D art and, more recently, in 2D anime illustrations. To be honest, I’ve found this technique very difficult to master; I’m not used to working without outlines and using traditional painting techniques.

For this piece, I decided to use my Android tablet and Krita software, as I really liked several of its blending brushes and wanted to make the most of that. It’s the best rendering I’ve done so far, but it’s a long way from being my favourite style, so I need to keep learning and practising the technique. I hope you like the final result. 🙏

En esta oportunidad quiero compartir con ustedes un fanart del personaje Xolo de @holozing. Con motivo de practica y experimentación, quise probar la técnica de "renderizado", muy utilizada en trabajos de concept art, arte 3D y recientemente en ilustraciones 2D anime. Siendo honesto está técnica me ha costado demasiado aprenderla, no me acostumbro a trabajar sin línea y con técnicas de pintura tradicional.

Para este trabajo decidí utilizar mi tableta Android y el software de Krita, dado a que me gustaron mucho varios de sus pinceles mezcladores y quise utilizar eso como ventaja. Hasta ahora es el mejor render que he hecho, pero está muy lejos de ser mi estilo favorito, por lo que debo seguir aprendiendo y practicando la técnica. Espero que les guste el resultado final. 🙏

💡 Boceto / Sketch	✒️ Lineart

I started by sketching the character as a thumbnail to decide on the pose and composition of the image. Finally, I cleaned up the lines, but without creating a final line art.

Comencé realizando el boceto del personaje en formato thumbnail o miniatura para definir la pose y tipo de composición que tendría la imagen. Finalmente, limpié las líneas, pero sin realizar un lineart final.

🎭 Palette and Mask / Paleta y Máscara	🎨 Base Colors / Colores Base

I then created a colour palette similar to the reference image and applied a fill layer to the character, using a grey base colour to serve as a layer mask.

Luego armé una paleta de color similar a la de la referencia, y apliqué una capa de relleno en el personaje, con un color base gris para usarla como máscara de capa.

Once I’d applied the base colours, I moved on to creating the shadows. I used a paintbrush with a blending effect and an airbrush in some areas to create colour gradients.

Por encima de los colores base pasé a crear las sombras. Utilicé un pincel de pintura con efecto de mezcla y aerógrafo en algunas zonas para degradar tonos.

Finally, I worked on the rendering: on a single layer, I began cleaning up the lines and adding highlights, all using the blending brush. I also changed the background colour to blend it in with the character. I then added lighting effects throughout the illustration, before making some final colour adjustments to ensure everything blended together and looked its best.

Finalmente trabajé en el renderizado, en una capa unificada comencé a limpiar las líneas y agregar las iluminaciones, todo con el pincel de mezcla. También cambie el color del fondo para integrarlo con el personaje. Luego añadí efectos de iluminación en toda la ilustración, para posteriormente realizar algunos ajustes finales en el color para que todo se integrara y viera mejor.
