Charcoal Coffee
Have you tried dunking charcoal in your coffee?
Meet Kopi arang (Charcoal Coffee) popular in Yogyakarta. This coffee is unique and often can only be found in the area. This coffee is also concentrated around Tugu Railway Station, the major hub of the city. There are many stalls around it that sells this coffee but only a few that are legendary that is directly in front of the Tugu Railway Station.
Throughout the year, I find myself trying this coffee at least once or twice. There's always someone who visit me and wanted to try this coffee. This coffee is pretty simple actually. It's simply grounded coffee poured with hot water. Then a hot flaming charcoal is put inside the coffee. When I first tried this coffee many years ago, it made me stayed up all night. But these days when I drink this coffee, I can still sleep soundly.
As you can see above, the coffee is really dark and for those of you are not caffeine tolerant, this can be a nightmare in a cup. It might give you problem with the caffeine content that it has considering this type of coffee is typically using Robusta rather than Arabica.
This coffee though now can also be found at restaurant and touristic places, nothing still tops the experience having it at the stalls in front of the Tugu Railway Station.
It is why once every few years, I am still talking about it and I hope in the future this local coffee won't be forgotten and replaced by the latte coffees that are more prevalent these days.
