Fledgling: Part 134
Greeting Readers!
Trigger warning for today's reading: Implied sexual assault against a minor. Please avoid the last paragraph if this is something you want to avoid reading.
Other than that. This is going back in time before Kay became what she did.
“I will find her.” Said the General when Shareik had told him that it was time for them to move forward with their plans.
Shareik hadn’t been happy with the young Kay being allowed to free-roam initially, and now that it would take time for the humans to locate her, his time constraints were getting tighter and tighter.
“Oh, lose the sour face. We know more or less where she is, and we have the so-called leader of their annoying little guerrilla band in our pocket. Like they say, ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’.” The General laughed. ‘We’ll have her in captivity by the end of the day.”
“How long has she been free?”
The General sat back in his chair, seemed to be considering his answer when another soldier came into the room and saluted.
“Bring the girl in.” snapped the General.
The soldier nodded his head and swiftly left the room.
“I think about five years.” The General continued. “Feisty little thing. Didn’t think she’d survive the first year, but I suppose her daddy taught her a few things about surviving…problems.”
The General scratched at the scar on his face before continuing, “We hung onto those trinkets you left for us. Had several doctors and scientists look over them too. Odd that we couldn’t replicate them. That said, we came up with something similar, and I must say, if we could have more of the originals, we could easily fight back this Fell Dragon.”
Shareik pursed his lips. He wasn’t sure that this particular timeline had the technology required to copy, much less produce anything similar to what the System was. This wasn’t something he had ever considered. However, he didn’t let his discomfort show on his face. He knew that the General would use that to his advantage.
“Continuing from our studies, we realised quite quickly that the body struggles to hold onto the power it creates. Is that perhaps why you thought Kay would be best for this little experiment? If so, I have news for you. While the child can absorb energy, she quickly has to expel it, or it starts to damage her. A bit of a snag with her ability.”
Ability?
Shareik had never completely come to explore what this Champion’s ability was. The other two he had looked over had all been mimics, and the one that had died was also one. He had assumed that this one would also be one. Had he been wrong? If so, how would that affect what was needed?
While he was trapped in his own musings, he failed to notice that the General had continued speaking. He was knocked out of his thoughts when the General said, “Seeing as our abilities are so similar.”
He knew he hadn’t caught the entire sentence, but he let it go. He would have to sacrifice this pawn as Saita was too close to being completed. He was loath to do it, but someone needed to be made Champion and fast.
He saw the General had a predatory grin on his face, something that made the injury that Kay had given him look positively grotesque.
As time passed, the General walked Shareik through the facilities that he would use to complete the process needed to create and house the Champion. The Heavenly stressed the need for the controller module, and the General assured him that it was the first piece that would be put inside the girl upon her detainment.
Detainment. Shareik hated that word, but what else was this? None of the girls he had looked over were truly in control of what had happened to them. While the one who had died hadn’t been detained, she had been painted into a corner, having no choice in her mind but to put herself through the agony of becoming a Champion.
All of that for nothing. Her world burned. Her child died, and eventually, she bled to death looking at a sky choked with the ashes of millions while the living screamed as the Wolven tore into them.
Another had been detained, only undergoing the genetic adaptation before her detainment had resulted in an unwanted pregnancy. One that haunted Shareik still. One that would always haunt him as he had somehow lost control of Edzeeker. He couldn’t allow anything else to fall beyond his parameters.
He was so lost in thought, he didn’t even realise that the General had brought him all the way back to his office. Except, this time, the office wasn’t empty when they stepped through the door.
Inside, with her hands firmly chained to the desk palm down, was the wild child that Shareik remembered. Her hair was wild, her face dirty, and a small smear of blood was in the corner of her mouth. Shareik wasn’t sure what the look on her face was, but it wasn’t one of fear. Resignation? Fury? He couldn’t tell. What he could tell was that she wasn’t captured without a fight. Her clothes were torn and dirty with splatters of blood over most of it.
“Nice of you to join us, Kay.” Said the General as he came to stand a little too close to the girl.
Shareik was immediately uncomfortable when the man lifted some of the girl’s hair and sniffed at it. Kay growled under her breath before saying.
“What the hell do you want?”
“Remember me, do you?”
“I remember the scar I gave you. Who’s this? Your gay lover?”
The General laughed before slipping a hand into one of the pockets on the back of the girl’s pants. She stiffened, and her face didn’t change.
The General leaned in close and spoke so softly that Shareik almost didn’t hear what he said.
“You’ll soon see that is not the case, and anyway. Imagine what our bloodlines could become.”
Kay’s face flushed a bright red, and her head swung around so fast that it was a small miracle that the General managed to dodge out of the way at all.
“Oh, you will not catch me like that again, young one.” The General gripped Kay’s chin tightly.
Shareik didn’t like what he was seeing. Kay tried to pull her hands back, but they were firmly attached to the desk. Her only defence against what was going to happen had been taken away from her, and from the look spreading on her face, she realised it too. Shareik wanted to step in. He should have stepped in, but he stopped. He knew at this moment that the Fell Dragon was indeed stirring, and the madness was spreading once more.
He needed to stop this, but he needed Kay to be the shield for Saita, and if this was what it cost for that to be achieved, he would have to look the other way.
Trigger warning
“You know, Heavenly, every wild thing can be made useful. As I said earlier, our abilities are so similar. Why not have a few spares?”
Shareik felt sick to his stomach as he bowed his head and hurried out of the room.
“Suit yourself.” Called the General after him as he gripped the back of Kay’s head and forced it between her hands.
Kay never had a chance with the Heavenly throwing her under the bus.
