Fledgling: Part 132

Greeting Readers!

And the move is complete! What a pain in the butt that was. From not knowing we were going to move to packing up the house and being in a new house within 3 days was an absolute nightmare. It didn't help that I had the latest flavour of flu and was horribly sick! Kudos to Nick for getting shit done.

So, yes, life got in the way of posting, so I have an extra long read for you all today. Please enjoy!

Despite knowing there was nothing left to gain from the action, Saita buried Kaiden and her son as deep as she could before she made her way back to the Time Corridors. Once she was there, she allowed her emotions to wash over her.

Bitterness, anger, relief, and sadness were an odd combination to feel, but it was there. The Fell Dragon had destroyed so much. There had to be some way to bring it to heel before all this loss was experienced.

Saita needed to gather her strength. She had hoped the universe would have had more to spare by the time she left, but there hadn’t been, and once more the marks wrapped around her bones were dimmed to just about nothing.

She placed her back against the wall of the corridor and slid down it until she was sitting with her knees drawn up to her chest. She just needed to rest a little. Once she was more rested, she would consider her next actions.

As she rested, she wasn’t aware of the Heavenly who had been following her for a while. Shareik was amazed by the power this Champion-Fell Dragon wielded. The young Princess was going to be amazing once she came into her own powers. He pondered what made her so powerful.

He had been considering it for some time, and at this moment, he was convinced it was because of the Fell Dragon that came before, but hadn’t been sure. It was why he had tried to control more versions of this one.
Of the three he had been aware of, only two remained. The universe he had watched this one come from had not been from his original plan. He had been aware that Edzeeker wanted to test a few theories, but he didn’t know that he had travelled to a universe to test those theories. It would seem that it had ended in failure, resulting in another Saita that couldn’t be used.

It was likely from this timeline that Edzeeker had learned where to locate the Champion-Dragon at a much younger age, starting his experiments much earlier. Likely the reason that the Champion-Dragon was the way she was and was the only one to succeed.

Shareik should have been mad. He should have been, but he wasn’t. The timeline of this particular Dragon was starting to become clear. The world that had been destroyed was the timeline before this one would be made. The irony wasn’t lost on the Heavenly.

He watched the Champion-Dragon fall asleep and almost made his way to her to have a better look at her. He was curious how she was doing since she had been separated from her leashed Dragon, but he was stopped when someone else came to stand beside her. This person fixed him with a glare, and he quickly realised that he needed to make himself scarce. This was the current Balance Dragon, something he had learned of recently, and it had been made clear with a few interactions now that it was protecting Saita.

Shareik stepped back and decided that it would be best to look in on the younger version of the one who lay resting, one who he fully controlled. Now that the Fell Dragon had been prevented from consuming a Champion, it would be looking for another, and at this point there was only one it could reach at this time. He had to warn Edzeeker. With the Dekai jumping time, there was a chance that the Fell Dragon would have followed.

However, when he found the Dekai, he was horrified to see the human doctor fiddling in Saita’s splayed chest while the Dekai was gripping her arm as hard as he dared. None of them seemed to be aware of the Heavenly watching the horror show they were putting on.

Shareik felt the girl’s mind pull tight, on the verge of snapping, before it ceased. A look of panic crossed the human doctor’s face, and he started shouting at his assistants. The Dekai’s face had turned grey, and he fled from the room. Shareik needed answers. He followed the Dekai and cornered him in the hallway where he was leaning against the wall, retching violently.

“What did you do?” demanded the Heavenly.

The Dekai spun around, not aware that the Heavenly was there. He was grey with tears running down his face. His breath was coming out in short, panicky gasps, whether from his retching or trying not to cry, Shareik wasn’t sure.

“I can’t watch her die.” He whispered.

“I’m aware. I just saw your other experiment die. She would have been torn apart if it wasn’t for…” Shareik stopped. He didn’t want Edzeeker to know what he knew.

Edzeeker didn’t seem shocked, but rather grimaced. “I needed to test a theory before working on the girl. I was right. You were right. She is perfect.”

Then his resolve crumbled, “She’s dying.”

Shareik left the Dekai to his panic, and he returned to the operating theatre where the human doctor Sellious was doing what he could to save the dying girl. He paused for no more than an instant when he saw the Heavenly.

“Should have known.” He muttered under his breath as he released the girl. “If your kind is involved, you can fix this.”

Shareik stepped forward, disgusted with what had been done. The young girl whose eye had been taken the last time he had seen her like this was spire white, except for the blood that ran from her nose. He was painfully aware of the still heart and the screaming of the machine close by.

He reached for her face. He hadn’t wanted this. He only wanted to save the world from the Fell Dragon. Her skin was cold, clammy, but there was a tiny spark left. He could bring her back. He had to bring her back, even though he knew the agony she would be in.

While there was no favour, he poured as much healing energy into her as he could. He would need to reconstruct the damage done to her heart and lungs. He could do that. He knew he could. However, he felt winded after just a few minutes. Something was wrong. He wasn’t supposed to be so weak.

He thought he would have more time before the Fell Dragon turned its attention to this time. He needed to have it look elsewhere. But before that, he needed to save Saita. Ignoring the pleas of the assistants to not do it, he reached for Saita’s heart and lightly squeezed it, while his other hand was laid over her expanding and contracting lungs. They were blood-filled, and the longer they were full of blood, the more the rest of her would break.

“I am sorry.” He whispered. “Remember the warrior queen.”

He continued to pour more and more of his life force into her, working on removing the blood from her lungs and getting her heart to beat once more. The longer he took, the paler she became, until suddenly, the muscular organ in Shareik’s hand contracted, before relaxing, and continued with the pattern.

The assistants were buzzing him around, muttering such things as “oxygen levels” and “miracles”, but he was exhausted. He had given too much of himself to ensure this one would make it.

Shareik handed the beating heart to an assistant and turned to Sellious. He had not met this man before. He wasn’t sure about him yet. Sellious, on the other hand, had torn the mask from his face and was grinning like a lunatic.
“A Heavenly invested in this madness! What a treat! Were you the one that finally allowed offspring to be made?”

Shareik heard what the man said, let the horror flow over him, before he left the room. He didn’t have time to discuss what the term “offspring” meant. He needed to create a stopgap now, or everything was going to be a waste.

He made his way to where the Dekai was still in the hallway, but now he was sitting on the ground, staring at the ceiling, ignoring what was happening in the room beyond. Shareik needed to understand what had happened, and he didn’t have time to question the Dekai. He placed a hand on the distraught Dekai’s head and absorbed the information he needed. Once he was done, he released Edzeeker and prepared to leave.

“She will live.” Was all the Heavenly said before he stepped into the Time Corridors.

There was only one other piece he could sacrifice. The young farm girl. There were no other Champions he had access to, or at least no other that didn’t match the energy that the girl was now producing.

He gritted his teeth. He had wanted to explore the farm girl’s abilities more, but now he had to rush to create a shield. This wasn’t what he wanted!

Until next time!
