COLORFUL STREETS OF A SWISS TOWN

ROMONT is a small town in the Canton of Fribourg, located between Lausanne and Fribourg in Switzerland. Recently, the wheels of my truck brought me there. We regularly deliver glass to a company based in the town. I had already been there several times before, but each visit was nothing more than a quick stop. There was never really enough time for sightseeing. I could probably have squeezed in an hour or two, but I do not like to rush, so I patiently waited for the moment when I would finally have a little more time in Romont.
This time, that opportunity came. I arrived for my unloading the day before, which meant I had the entire afternoon to explore at least a small part of the town.

ROMONT was founded in the 13th century by the Counts of Savoy and its name most likely means “Roman mountain” or “Roman hill.” As the name suggests, the town – or rather its historic center – was built on a hill. Thanks to its elevated position, it served an important defensive role for centuries and it also made my walk a bit more challenging than expected. 😃

To this day, visitors can still see fragments of the medieval town walls and towers. I managed to photograph those as well, but today I would like to show you the more colorful side of Romont. This time, I will focus mainly on the architecture, which immediately caught my attention.
So, let me take you on a short walk through the colorful streets of this charming Swiss town.

ROMONT to niewielkie miasteczko w kantonie Fribourg położone między Lozanną a Fribourgiem. Ostatnio zawiozły mnie tam koła mojej ciężarówki. Mamy tam firmę, do której regularnie dostarczamy szkło. Byłam tam już kilka razy, jednak za każdym razem był to tylko szybki wjazd i wyjazd. Nie było zbytnio czasu na zwiedzanie. Zapewne godzinkę czy dwie bym wygospodarowała, natomiast nie lubię się śpieszyć, także cierpliwie czekałam na moment, kiedy będę miała w Romont trochę więcej czasu.
I tak się złożyło tym razem. Na swój rozładunek przyjechałam już dzień wcześniej, a to oznaczało, że mam całe popołudnie, aby co nieco zobaczyć.

Miasto ROMONT zostało założone w XIII wieku przez książąt sabaudzkich, a sama nazwa najprawdopodobniej oznacza „rzymską górę” lub „rzymskie wzgórze”. Jak sama nazwa wskazuje, miasteczko, a właściwie jego historyczne centrum, zostało zbudowane na wzgórzu. Dzięki temu przez wieki miało znaczenie obronne, a mój spacer okazał się momentami całkiem wymagający. 😀

Do dziś można tam zobaczyć fragmenty średniowiecznych murów miejskich oraz wież. Udało mi się sfotografować również te zabytki, jednak dzisiaj przedstawię Wam bardziej kolorową stronę Romont. Tym razem skupię się przede wszystkim na architekturze, która od razu przykuła moją uwagę.

Zapraszam Was na krótki spacer po kolorowych uliczkach tego urokliwego szwajcarskiego miasteczka.

The town center itself is not very large. In fact, it consists of just one main street and a handful of side streets. Each of them seemed to have its own unique character. The pastel-colored facades and vibrant details made the walk a real feast for the eyes. I had the impression that the entire town was bursting with color. Everywhere I looked, my attention was drawn to the distinctive shutters painted in a variety of shades, elegant townhouses, and roofs covered with traditional red tiles.

Samo centrum nie jest zbyt duże. Tak naprawdę mamy tutaj jedną główną ulicę i kilka bocznych uliczek. Każda z nich wydawała się mieć swój własny charakter. Pastelowe elewacje i kolorowe detale sprawiały, że spacer był prawdziwą ucztą dla oczu. Miałam wrażenie, że całe miasteczko mieni się kolorami. Co chwilę moją uwagę przyciągały charakterystyczne okiennice w najróżniejszych odcieniach, eleganckie kamienice oraz dachy pokryte czerwoną dachówką.

The people of Romont seem to be very proud of both their town and their country. As I walked through the streets, I noticed several Swiss flags and the city's coat of arms displayed on buildings. It was clear that these were not merely decorations, but above all a reflection of the residents' strong attachment to their region. I must admit that I found it very touching.

Mieszkańcy Romont wydają się być bardzo dumni zarówno ze swojego miasta, jak i całego kraju. Spacerując ulicami zauważyłam kilka flag Szwajcarii oraz herby miasta zawieszone na budynkach. Widac, iż to nie tylko dekoracje ale przede wszystkim przywiązanie do regionu. Musze przyznać, że bardzo mnie to ujęło.

I also noticed one more thing. For a relatively small town, Romont seems to have quite a few hotels. That surprised me, as it did not strike me as a particularly touristy destination or a business hub attracting large numbers of visitors. Of course, I may be wrong about that. Perhaps the reason lies, at least in part, in the famous Vitromusée. This museum is dedicated to stained glass and the art of glassmaking, and it is well known throughout Switzerland. It is not really my kind of attraction, so I will probably skip it myself, but there is no doubt that it has many devoted admirers.

Zauważyłam też jedną rzecz, a mianowicie w tym stosunkowo małym miasteczku znajduje się sporo hoteli. Zdziwiło mnie to, bo nie wydawało mi się, że Romont jest miastem bardzo turystycznym, tudzież biznesowym, skupiającym dużo osób przyjezdnych, ale być może się mylę w tej kwestii, a być może jest to również za sprawą słynnego Muzeum Vitromusée. Jest to muzeum poświęcone witrażom i sztuce szkła. To muzeum jest znane w całej Szwajcarii. Nie są to moje klimaty, więc ja raczej się tam nie wybiorę, ale z pewnością muzeum to znajduje bardzo dużo swoich wielbicieli.

Originally, I came here to deliver glass. In the end, I left not only with an empty trailer, but also with dozens of new photographs and another place that I can add to my photographic map of Europe.
Travelling by truck has many advantages. One of them is the opportunity to discover places that most tourists never get the chance to visit.

Pierwotnie przyjechałam tutaj dostarczyć szkło. Ostatecznie wróciłam nie tylko z pustą naczepą, ale również z kilkudziesięcioma nowymi zdjęciami i kolejnym miejscem, które mogę dopisać do swojej fotograficznej mapy Europy. Podróżowanie ciężarówką ma wiele zalet. Jedną z nich jest właśnie możliwość odkrywania miejsc, do których większość turystów nigdy nie dociera. 🙂
