These are, sincerely, strange days here. My town, Montalbán, is a place accustomed to problems, but it seems to me that this time, the collective psyche of our adult population is much more affected than other times. And I say all this after days of "observing" everything possible around me. I mean that most people seem to want to recover normalcy as soon as possible, but they still stop, look me in the eyes, and start talking to me about all the tensions and the uncertainty that seems to "float" over everyone's heads here...

Estos son, sinceramente, días extraños aquí. Mi pueblo, Montalbán, es un lugar acostumbrado a los problemas, pero me parece que esta vez la psiquis colectiva de nuestra población adulta está mucho más afectada que otras veces. Y digo todo esto luego de días "observando" todo lo posible a mi alrededor. Hablo de que la mayoría de las personas parecen querer recuperar la normalidad lo antes posible, pero igual se detienen, me miran a los ojos y comienzan a hablarme sobre todas las tensiones y la incertidumbre que parece "flotar" sobre las cabezas de todos aquí...

The "almost stoic" joy of the children is palpable, as always, but while they continue playing in the streets, many are repairing their homes damaged as a result of last week's earthquake, others strive to earn some money for their daily needs, others constantly ponder the possibility of even worse things happening than those that have occurred, since the ghost of a possible social unrest in the areas most affected by the catastrophe is something that is already on everyone's lips here...

La "casi estoica" alegría de los niños es palpable, como siempre, pero mientras ellos siguen jugando en las calles, muchos están reparando sus casas dañadas a raíz del sismo de la semana pasada, otros procuran ganar algo de dinero para sus necesidades del día, otros cavilan constantemente sobre la posibilidad de que ocurran cosas aún peores que las que han ocurrido, pues el fantasma de un posible estallido social en las zonas más afectadas por la catástrofe es algo que ya anda en boca de todos aquí...

I took these photos from the streets near my house; in fact, the house seen in some photos being repaired by bricklayers up on scaffolding is my old house, of which part of the roof collapsed due to the effects of the June 24th earthquake. Fortunately, the major damages have already been repaired...

Hice estas fotos desde las calles cercanas a mi casa; de hecho, la casa que se ve en algunas fotos siendo reparada por albañiles subidos a andamios es mi vieja casa, a la cual se le cayó parte del tejado por efectos del sismo del 24 de junio. Afortunadamente, ya han sido reparados los daños mayores...

But the truth is that, at least most of the people here, we have the feeling—just as a neighbor told me in the street today—the town and the country in general have taken "another step backward," and this is something that actually disturbs the mood of even the most composed...

Pero lo cierto es que, cuando menos la mayor parte de las personas aquí, tenemos la sensación —tal como me dijo un vecino hoy en la calle— de que el pueblo y el país en general han dado "otro paso más hacia atrás", y esto es algo que en realidad perturba el ánimo aun de los más ecuánimes...

But hope is still there, valid as it has always been throughout all these difficult years, and it lives in the children capable of continuing to play and surely also the people who ignore their justified fears and doubts and continue forward without allowing themselves to be defeated...

Pero la esperanza sigue ahí, vigente como siempre ha estado a lo largo de todos estos años difíciles, y vive en los niños capaces de seguir jugando y seguramente también en las personas que obvian sus justificados temores y dudas y continúan adelante sin dejarse vencer...
