[Movie] Violent Ends

This is the kind of movie I love. Crime dramas are very appealing, especially when they're set in rural America, in towns where I'd be terrified to live. Places with tough guys who learn to shoot from childhood. The United States definitely doesn't appeal to me as a place to live, much less in a town like the one in the movie. I'd live in constant fear. I'm not white, I'm Hispanic, and I'd feel like at any moment some deranged white supremacist extremist could shoot me.

This movie reminds me of many others that use the same style, also set in the American South. I think these crime dramas belong to the subgenre called Southern Gothic. Something like that, I think. Nowadays there are so many subgenres that I'm completely lost. I prefer to continue classifying it as a crime thriller.

This time, the story takes place in Arkansas, a state with many mountainous areas, forests, and even the Mississippi River nearby. It's a place where strong, tough, and wealthy men live, and where crime is also a part of everyday life. The story begins with a brief introduction indicating that the area is dominated by a crime family called the Frost. This family, since beginning its operations in the 1980s, has split into two factions. You know the drill: small town, big problems, and this family seems to be quite large.

The narrative starts calmly, something I also appreciate in this type of story. The first half is practically an introduction to the characters and situations, establishing the context: the family, their businesses, who's free, who's in prison, who's thinking of leaving everything behind to start a new life, and so on. And then, what happens unleashes all the violence.

Every act of silence has consequences. One mistake can be very costly. One tragic event can lead others to cross the line. That tragic tone is present from the beginning and intensifies with each passing minute. When the violence erupts, there's no turning back. In this rural setting, blood will flow freely among the members of a family.

The film doesn't mince words when showing us this violence. It doesn't try to hide anything. I liked that, because it gives it that raw and brutal edge that I find so fascinating in stories of crime and revenge. It also helps that it's an independent film, outside the major studios, with a relatively small budget. Although that's also the reason why it's unlikely to be released in theaters in my country and many others. It's currently available on Prime Video.

John-Michael Powell writes and directs, and this is his second film. I hope that in his next project he returns to a similar story, or at least one set in a rural Southern town. This is the kind of film I want to see, and they're hard to find. Far from any grandiosity, silly jokes, and happy endings. No, what I want to see is blood, tragedy, death, violence. Life isn't a bed of roses, and I want films to show me how complex the world is.

Este es el tipo de película que me encanta. Los dramas policíacos son muy atractivos, sobre todo cuando se ambientan en la América rural, en pueblos donde me daría pánico vivir. Lugares con tipos duros que aprenden a disparar desde la infancia. Estados Unidos definitivamente no me atrae como lugar para vivir, y mucho menos en un pueblo como el de la película. Viviría con miedo constante. No soy blanco, soy hispano, y sentiría que en cualquier momento algún extremista supremacista blanco desquiciado podría dispararme.

Esta película me recuerda a muchas otras que usan el mismo estilo, también ambientadas en el sur de Estados Unidos. Creo que estos dramas policíacos pertenecen al subgénero llamado gótico sureño. Algo así, creo. Hoy en día hay tantos subgéneros que estoy completamente perdido. Prefiero seguir clasificándola como un thriller policíaco.

Esta vez, la historia se desarrolla en Arkansas, un estado con muchas zonas montañosas, bosques e incluso el río Misisipi cerca. Es un lugar donde viven hombres fuertes, duros y adinerados, y donde el crimen también forma parte de la vida cotidiana. La historia comienza con una breve introducción que indica que la zona está dominada por una familia criminal llamada Frost. Esta familia, desde que inició sus operaciones en la década de 1980, se ha dividido en dos facciones. Ya saben cómo es: pueblo pequeño, grandes problemas, y esta familia parece ser bastante numerosa.

La narración comienza con calma, algo que también aprecio en este tipo de historias. La primera mitad es prácticamente una introducción a los personajes y las situaciones, estableciendo el contexto: la familia, sus negocios, quién está libre, quién está en prisión, quién piensa dejarlo todo atrás para empezar una nueva vida, etc. Y entonces, lo que sucede desata toda la violencia.

Cada acto de silencio tiene consecuencias. Un error puede ser muy costoso. Un evento trágico puede llevar a otros a cruzar la línea. Ese tono trágico está presente desde el principio y se intensifica con cada minuto que pasa. Cuando la violencia estalla, no hay vuelta atrás. En medio de este entorno rural, la sangre correrá libremente entre los miembros de una familia.

La película no se anda con rodeos al mostrarnos esta violencia. No intenta ocultar nada. Me gustó eso, porque le da ese toque crudo y brutal que me resulta tan fascinante en las historias de crimen y venganza. También ayuda que sea una película independiente, fuera de los grandes estudios, con un presupuesto relativamente pequeño. Aunque esa es también la razón por la que es poco probable que se estrene en cines en mi país y en muchos otros. Actualmente está disponible en Prime Video.

John-Michael Powell escribe y dirige, y esta es su segunda película. Espero que en su próximo proyecto vuelva a una historia similar, o al menos a una ambientada en un pueblo rural del sur. Este es el tipo de película que quiero ver, y son difíciles de encontrar. Lejos de cualquier grandilocuencia, chistes tontos y finales felices. No, lo que quiero ver es sangre, tragedia, muerte, violencia. La vida no es un camino de rosas, y quiero que las películas me muestren lo complejo que es el mundo.
